The case for Austria joining Germany was Infinitely stronger than anything the US is doing. There had been mass support in Austria for joining the German reich pretty much from the end of ww1 until Anschluss. The Victors opposed it so it didn’t happen peacefully. 

I have a book with a collection of newspaper articles from the year 1921. support for joining Germany was 80-90% (I think I’m only gona look if im challenged) in an Austrian plebiscite.
