ROME, Jan 9 (Reuters) – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she did not believe the United States would use military force to seize Greenland, warning on Friday that such a move would have grave consequences for NATO.

At her traditional New Year’s press conference, Meloni said a reinforced NATO presence in the Arctic would help address U.S. concerns about rival powers gaining influence in the region, reducing pressure for unilateral action by Washington.

“I continue not to believe in the hypothesis that the United States would launch a military action to take control of Greenland, an option I would clearly not support,” said Meloni, one of U.S. President Donald Trump’s closest allies in Europe.

Her comments come amid rising tensions over U.S. policy in the Arctic and Europe’s role in shaping security policy, after last weekend’s U.S. swoop on Venezuela rekindled concerns about Trump’s intentions towards Greenland.

    THREAT TO NATO

While most EU leaders criticised the United States for grabbing President Nicolas Maduro in a daring military raid, Meloni said she had supported the operation.

“I agreed with Trump on Venezuela. I do not agree with him on Greenland,” she said, adding that it would not be in anyone’s interest for the United States to seize the vast territory, which is strategically located between Europe and North America.

“I think it would not even be in the interest of the United States of America, to be clear,” Meloni added.

The White House said on Tuesday that the U.S. was considering a range of options to acquire Greenland, including the use of military force.

The Italian leader said it was “clear to everyone” that any U.S. move on Greenland would have a significant impact on NATO, adding this was the reason she did not think Washington would follow through on its threats.

However, she said it was important for NATO to boost its presence in the region, adding that she understood U.S. concerns over the need to prevent “excessive interference from other actors that could even be hostile”.

Meloni has traditionally had strong ties with Trump and was the only European leader to attend his inauguration last year.

Her supporters had hoped she would have privileged access to him and become a bridge between Washington and Europe, but it is far from clear that he has heeded her advice up until now.

“There are many things on which I do not agree with Trump. For example, I believe international law must be strongly defended. … When I disagree, I tell him, I have no difficulty doing so,” Meloni said on Friday.

The UK seems to be taking this line as well; that the best thing we could do is to reinforce our arctic forces and remove the rationale behind Trump’s claims. It would also prevent the presentation of a fait accompli by basing actual forces in Greenland

  3. Nuclear-Jester on

Meloni was also the only European leader to praise Trump’s actions in Venezuela, wanted to introduce starlink in our defence sistems and some of her allies outright praised Trump’s tariffs against the EU

So, you know, maybe don’t trust her too much

America is probably going to take Greenland somehow, and will kick Communists out of Cuba too. Donroe Doctrine, an advanced version of Monroe Doctrine yearns that America must have The Western hemisphere under its control in a soon to come storm.

Here in Finland it is quite a feeling to realize that America might be our close neighbour within few months. The distance between Lapland and Greenland is relatively small.

Unfortunately Trump considers everyone who isn’t sucking his stinking dick a rival power.

In a normal world she‘d be right, but Trump is a dementia ridden narcissistic psychopath surrounded by equal minded yes men

  7. Arkediem on

Who gives a fuck what she thinks. She was one of the first to travel to Trump’s child distribution center to suck him off

Can Meloni stop simping for Trump at least once a year?

    This is a terrible belief.

NATO should recognize US as a possible traitor or a puppet state by Putin.

A strong Arctic presence for sure but NATO must be ready to cut off US should US perform ANY act of war towards the member states.

NATO must remain intact and defend itself even if it needs to cut off it’s own cancerous arm or leg.

Good thing politicians never make mistakes and always tell the truth. /s

That’s because she’s far right. I’m actually surprised she hasn’t joined Putins or Trumps rhetoric….yet. The UK, French and German far right seems to either want to go fight Europe with Russia OR join Trump to fight Europe.

    It’s just complete insanity…

  12. They will not if and only if we have a clear a strong stance about it, backed by enough troops on site to make a move a political gamble. Otherwise Trump will size Greenland, one way or another.

She is right that Greenland needs to be properly guarded. Not just militarily, but also economically and not just because of US interests, but primarily because of EU interests. The EU should negotiate with Greenlands government to mine more in exchange for a cut of the profits.

These people keep underestimate trumps ability to be insane, and distract from the Epstein files.

  16. 0-Gravity-72 on

It will happen one way or another. And probably before the Epstein files are fully released too.

Moving military resources there will weaken EU defense at the wrong time

  17. If everyone could stop being literal and take MAGA lies at face value, that’d be great.

The US doesn’t want Greenland because of a military presence, they can already put 50 bases there if they want to, there’s literally no issue with putting NATO bases there if required. If they don’t want NATO bases but just US bases, this too can be achieved simply, via diplomatic channels.

    It’s something else.

  18. Only_Razzmatazz_4498 on

Meloni was wrong about Trump before. She’s just trying to manifest it.

  19. spartane69 on

So why do we need a stronger presence in the artic if Trump isnt a menace ??

  20. Icy_Party954 on

Create an alternative to NATO last year. France realized what it was, why they tried to resist being part of it.

  21. Regardless of what you think of her prediction, the increased Arctic presence, especially if it is actual soldiers on Greenland, is the most important part. Then both scenarios are prepared for

  22. silentspectator27 on

Yeah, that’s what people said about ruzzia before they invaded Ukraine.

Putin: Dozy, I want you to distract the EU. Get them to waste resources and send military to some remote place.

Dozy O’Donald: Yes sir. Can I please use empty threats and act like a crazed dictator?

    Putin: Sure, I like tributes.

  24. pixelkydd on

Meloni is among the last people I would trust with what she believes, given her past actions.

  25. kkapulic on

Americans are already there, while Trump is distracting everyone with his trash talk american corporations are buying up everything they can. Europe must at all cost prevent all grenland strategic resources fall into US companies hands. Few thousands soldiers will not mean anything if all grenlandese end up employed by US mega corporations.

  26. k4kkul4pio on

Absolutely reinforce the arctic presence but also absolutely do not trust these.. compromised mouth pieces spouting convenient Trump propaganda.

  27. GallorKaal on

No way, the person that everyone has warned about being a fascist defends the bigger fascist?

  28. Several_Ant_9867 on

That’s what France and Britain said about Hitler before he invaded Poland

  29. Titoto972 on

    Yeah…
.we were wrong for the invasion of Ukraine
.we have been wrong about how far Trump will go on tarrifs
.we have been wrong on Trump ideas as to what peace is
.we have been wrong on Trump/Netanyahu limits and ideas for the future of gaza and the Cisjordanie
.we were wrong on the relationship with the USA since we discovered that the Obama administration was spying on us
.we were wrong jn buying more weapons from the USA to mend the relationship and get more respect from them

So yeah, surely we are right to think that they are not going to take it in anyway they see fit **after** they told us that they will take it in anyway they see fit.

    Fricking hell….

  30. Whooptidooh on

Meloni forfeited her credibility when she tried to lick Trump’s taint.
