It’s a big and very fast ballistic missile (IRBM) that **can** carry a nuclear warhead (though it never has).

However, since it will most likely never be used that way, you can think of it as a very big and very expensive gun that can fire several very big bullets at extremely high speeds (10 times the speed of sound).

It’s typically launched from ground to a very high altitude from which it dives down towards its target.

The effect of the high speed is that it’s practically impossible to intercept it, and also the high kinetic energy of the projectiles enable them to penetrate well protected targets and also removes the need for any explosive warheads.
