I think Putin could see this noose tightening around his neck. It’s why he’s been trying to get China to sign up for new oil and gas pipelines.
This is a form of pressure the West always had but were reluctant to use. Russia’s navy is decimated by decades of corruption and mismanagement and spread too thin to defend their shadow fleet.

About time. This would really turn the screws and enforce international maritime law at the same time.

Let the SBS have a go!
Special Boat Service in case anyone doesn’t know, as opposed to SAS, Special Air Service.

We should be ready to seize shipping breaking internation law regardless. We don’t know if they are russian or not – because they are unflagged and unregistered. Technically…

Great Book about the SBS by Duncan Falconer – First into Action. Fascinating read that includes on how they are trained on maritime asset seizure eg oil rigs, ships. Written a while ago but can only think their capabilities have increased.

People sarcastically commenting “no rush” and “take your time” as if Britain isn’t far and away leading in this field.
You’d think Germany and France had been doing this for years by the comments.
Classic Europe moment

Well, cool. If we actually start doing that it would go a very very long way towards shutting this shit down, because it’s practically impossible to leave a non-Pacific Russian port without going within range of the UK (or Ukraine, but they’ve got that covered lol).
I have to say I think the minister is probably being liberal with the truth here though; seizing the ship the other day probably was illegal under international law…but given Russia already doesn’t care about that maybe it’s time to stop letting it get in the way.
As for giving effect to the policy though…I’ll be interested to see how it would work. The yanks actually had quite a lot of force involved, not just the coast guard cutter but at least one Arleigh Burke, and the UK had Tideforce supporting. Are we going to dedicate a similar group in the long term? Or accept that ships will slip through when assets are busy (or rely on the US to get those ones)

SBS needs a proper mission cadence, let the boys get their reps in
