Serhii Smolyak was at the site of an initial drone strike with an ambulance crew in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district.

Emergency services said the ambulance team had completed their work and was preparing to leave when Russian forces carried out a follow-up strike. The drone hit about 50 meters from the medics.

Three ambulances were destroyed in the attack, and three medical workers were wounded. Smolyak died at the scene from severe injuries.

Before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Smolyak worked as a senior paramedic in Nova Kakhovka, in the Kherson region. In early 2022, he and his family fled to Kyiv, where he joined the 17th unit of the Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine Center as a paramedic.

Serhii was 56.
