French President Emmanuel Macron called for additional military spending to confront mounting global threats even as uncertainty remains over France’s budget.
The requested funding would provide €36 billion ($42 billion) in additional resources for a “change of scale” in France’s military through 2030, Macron said Thursday in an annual speech to the armed forces. Speaking from an airbase in Istres, Southern France, he said the total includes some €3.5 billion earmarked for this year.
“To remain free, one must be feared — to be feared, one must be powerful,” Macron said. “And to be powerful in this brutal world, one must move faster and more forcefully.”

That sounds good, but can France afford it? And what happens if the far right win power?
A big part of the reason Europe is not feared is because of our lack of political unity and stability.

Yes, tax the rich to build up our military!
What? That’s not the plan? Oh…

I agree, but it’s an hard challenge considering France current debt and political instability.

That would take the French deficit to 8%, absolutely no chance of this happening.

Heard we were sending troops trained in mountain warfare in greenland for military drills, along with Germany and Sweden.
That’s a good message to send, but i don’t really know Denmark stance, in the last few weeks they were still in denial and very willing to strengthen military coopération with the US.
And i’m not judging, i respect trying the diplomatic approach until the very end, but i just really think we should have sent those troops back in january of last year, when Macron first floated the idea after Trump’s made these threats.

Okay, instead of putting the money into social housing, I’m okay with the army.

If the poor go to the trenches, there will be no more money coming in since he doesn’t tax the rich.

There is nothing noble about being a disarmed pacifist. You aren’t choosing to be neutral, or to not intervene, or take actions, you’re entirely helpless and incapable of doing anything else.

It’s sad that it’s needed. An united NATO had nothing to fear. Unfortunately times change.

Give nukes to Kallas and the world will truly have something to fear.

Meaningless, Macron doesn’t have control of the French Parliament and can’t get a budget passed.
He can neither cut spending elsewhere to fund this nor increase taxes to do it.
