The most ridiculous statement recently made by Trump is that NATO should ensure that Greenland becomes American. It seems that this president does not realize that he himself is the leader of NATO and that, if he gets his way, this will mean the end of the alliance.

Whatever Trump’s motives may be, European NATO members must put a stop to his imperialism. Such a NATO leader is useless, so the now former European allies must threaten to kick America out of NATO. I constantly hear the mantra that “we cannot do without America.” Nonsense. It is a matter of will.

American troops can easily be replaced by European ones. French and British nuclear weapons can take over the Americans’ nuclear role. With the help of the Ukrainian Delta system linked to European satellite systems, we can also carry out major military operations ourselves. We can now develop advanced long-range weapons together with Ukraine. The EU’s ReArm Europe program is gaining momentum. In a few years, the most important gaps in European defense will be closed.

If America is kicked out of NATO, the damage to its position of power in the world will be disastrous. Ramstein Air Base and the headquarters in Stuttgart, for example, are essential for American operations in Africa and the Middle East. Drones are controlled from Ramstein all over the world. Moreover, repatriating and relocating American troops—80,000 to 100,000 soldiers and their families—and dismantling bases would be prohibitively expensive, even for the Americans.

If Greenland is taken over and Trump goes further, for example by setting his sights on the militarily even more relevant Norwegian Spitsbergen, then we must hit America economically.

The ‘nuclear option’ that the EU can apply is the anti-coercion instrument with which America can be denied access to the European integrated market in whole or in part. Less damaging are targeted sanctions, high import duties on American products, entry bans for American politicians and industrial leaders, a sharp reduction in dollar transactions, ‘buy European’ legislation, tackling American tech companies through the Digital Services Act and the Digital Market Act, and rapidly becoming less dependent on American LNG. The list is endless.

Trump constantly claims that he ‘holds all the cards’. But in his overconfidence, he overlooks the power of Europe, or rather the EU. Provided that European countries become aware of their power and are willing to use it. Military steps are already being taken in response to the Russian threat. Economically, Europe can speak with one voice when it comes to trade policy. Because then it is Brussels’ turn to act.

Jean Claude Juncker, hailing from tiny Luxembourg, managed to put Trump in his place in 2018 as President of the European Commission when Trump announced tariffs on European cars.

European leaders must start speaking Juncker’s language of power. No more “deals,” because for Trump that is a euphemism for capitulation. So no negotiations, but say no to American land grabbing and make it clear to Trump what price he will have to pay for his aggression. We are paying a high price for putting pressure on him, but if we give Trump his way, we will ultimately pay an even higher price.

The European leaders need to build its own millatary forces now to combat any invasion from America. Let trump drop out of NATO if that what they want. Because you can’t trust any help from trumps administration. While he’s still in the Whitehouse. He’s a dangerous dictator with his nodding enablers that won’t stand up to trump manic desires of building a empire.

This makes no sense. This is what Trump wants.This is what Putin wants. NATO is a red line for many republicans even if they are no longer our ally’s. There would be zero strategy to doing this.

Some valid points below worth considering. 

By virtue of their intelligence, carrier groups, air dominance and logistics, the US basically “is” NATO.

Kicking them out, while there isn’t a clear reason for doing, so is shortsighted and stupid.

What about kicking Russia and its pedo US puppets out of the planet?

Why? They’re already about to do that themselves with the invasion into another country, so there’s no reason to preemptively kick them out and give them a reason to pretend like they’re a victim of something again.

I love how most of the comments say that this is russian propaganda, while we spent the last 50 years letting other’s dictate our own foreign policy regarding Russia.

Ignoring Russia and treating them as an absolute evil created and empowered Putin. Instead, we could have exerted influence in Russian’s affairs, instead of letting the yankees do the talking. Now we can’t even sit at the grown up’s table without asking for permission.

As for kicking the US out of NATO, I’ll do you one better: keep NATO as it is. Create an European army and replace american bases in European territories with it.

At the same time, grant Greenland full EU member status (if they want to, of course), and bring on Canada. Yee-haw.

Yeah, no! As hurtful this is to admit as European, we’re still super dependent on the US security wise. Decades of missed investments into security and intelligence, can’t be made up in a couple months. We have to cling as long as possible to wannebe hitler and hope he doesn’t escalates further too quickly.

Europe needs to rapidly improve their military and intelligence. I’d say we’re on a good way, but still have a long way to go. We lived in a bubble where nothing could hurt our relations with the US and have a rough awaking now. But cutting ties with the US right now is exactly what those bennons, millers, putins and so on want.

Yes. That is trumps plan. He thinks NATO is not paying up the amount of money they promised. Plus NATO is highly inefficient as a force. Europe will get screwed because their defense budget right now is barely 1-2 percent. Just think taking 30 percent. Europe will not like cutting its social benefits. You will see what trump wants. He over pays to protect Europe. We pay for all the NATO bases, we lease the land. US pays about 60 percent of the budget for NATO. Newsweek reports the U.S. covered more than 68% of NATO’s total budget last year when including all forms of spending Newsweek. Will be nice to see Europe finally paying for its own defense

But EU do not have any resources, like oil and gas for example, it can’t give the middle finger to everybody. It will kill itself doing that.

I don’t think we can kick the US out of NATO because the NATO structures deeply rely on the USA. NATO would simply cease to exist as soon as Trump attacks a NATO ally. What we need is a completely new fresh military alliance. Preferably a purely European one (Canada is welcome, too).

Would help if people actually understand how NATO works and what an international treaty is.

You can’t kick anyone out of the treaty, because there is no mechanism for it inside the treaty.
Basically you need a new treaty which needs to be ratified by all members.

The other thing is, it’s already questionable how much NATO is undermined by the US (and Hungary and Slovakia etc), since NATO requires unanimity for any decision to be made, even article 5 contingencies. People think there is an automatism when it comes to article 5 and mutual defense. But an article 5 contingency needs to be announced in the North Atlantic Council and all members must agree, before NATO can do anything.

For that reason the military exercise planned by Denmark in the arctic is not a joint NATO exercise, but Denmark invited the countries individually, to make it a non-NATO operation, I think only Poland refused.

However, unfortunately the US is still the by far biggest component in NATO. 76% of all military intelligence is supplied by them (Norway and the UK supply 6% each, Germany only 1%). Also NATO aerial refueling and airlift capacity is absolutely dominated by the US. The US military is deeply integrated into the NATO command structure.
It would be easier to start a new mutual defence organisation that trying to kick the US out of NATO.

I believe his arguments are as follows: the US will not defend the EU any longer (enemies might bet on this), hence having the US in Nato gives a false sense of security and makes the EU easy to blackmail/extort. He basically says it is rather a formality, Nato is already dead. It is rather extreme, let’s hope it is not necessary

If foreign policy made decisions based off the emotional responses of redditors we all would’ve nuked each other 10 times over by now

Should’ve invited the US over to fight Russia in 2022. Instead of fighting the inevitable war with the right people in place we get the inevitable war with all the wrong people in place. We have to let this lesson of inaction and appeasement be a reminder of why it didn’t work with Hitler and will never work with these types. Many generations of Americans and Europeans learned this in school and we still didn’t do shit to stop it before getting out of hand. Good luck to everyone

you can’t throw anyone out of nato, but you can leave if you want. so go ahead and leave if you want to be out of the alliance with the USA.
