Slovenia to Send Two Military Officers to Greenland for NATO Arctic Exercise

The Slovenian government has approved sending two officers from the Slovenian Armed Forces to take part in the planning and execution of an international military exercise called Arctic Resilience, led by Denmark. The exercise is expected to take place in Greenland, though the exact timing will be decided during the planning phase.

According to the decision, the Ministry of Defence will carry out the necessary procedures for Slovenia’s participation in both the planning and execution of the exercise. The stated goal is to support regional security.

The Slovenian news outlet N1 reports that the two officers could travel to Greenland within the next few days. The government’s explanation notes that Greenland, as part of the Arctic region, is identified in NATO’s strategic concept as a strategically important area. Russia is considered capable of disrupting allied reinforcements and freedom of navigation there, making the region part of NATO’s collective defense responsibilities that must be defended and deter potential adversaries.

The decision also states that if, during the planning phase, a need arises for a larger deployment or greater involvement of Slovenian Armed Forces capabilities, the government would decide on this through a separate resolution.

Some European countries have already begun deploying troops to Greenland as part of the broader exercise.

The government cited Article 84 of Slovenia’s Defence Act, which gives it authority to decide on participation of the Slovenian Armed Forces in fulfilling obligations within international organizations, as well as on training activities abroad. Slovenia and Denmark have also had a memorandum of understanding on military cooperation in place since 1998.
