SEOUL – Giorgia Meloni feels an urgent need amidst the skyscrapers of Seoul: to send a signal of unity to the Europeans. And above all, not to be overwhelmed by support for Donald Trump, who continues to threaten Europe. For this reason, the Prime Minister is summoning journalists. Her face is that of a complex moment, the tension visible. In the last few hours, she has spoken to Donald Trump, and soon she will speak to the major European leaders. The situation risks getting out of hand, because Brussels seems ready to react. A scenario the leader would like to avoid at all costs. Therefore, she doesn’t even wait for the question and instead lays out her position on the record: “The forecast of an increase in tariffs against those nations that have chosen to contribute to Greenland’s security is a mistake, and I don’t agree with it.” That’s exactly what she says: a mistake.

It’s perhaps the first time the Prime Minister hasn’t chosen mild terms to criticize the tycoon. Although she immediately adds that there was likely “a problem of understanding and communication.” She is referring to the decision by several EU countries—including France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway, and Sweden—to participate in joint exercises with Denmark in Greenland, which sparked an American reaction and the threat of new tariffs. The decision by the continental partners, she emphasizes, should not be interpreted as “anti-American.” It is therefore necessary to “resume dialogue and avoid an escalation.”

For Meloni, resuming discussions means imagining a shared solution between the European Union and the White House that includes the presence of possible new troops as part of an Atlantic Alliance mission. “I continue to insist on the role of NATO,” she says, “because NATO is where we must jointly organize deterrent tools against potentially hostile interference in a clearly strategic territory.” This isn’t what the European governments are thinking, but the leader continues to support this position, hoping that ultimately this will be the compromise solution. She informs reporters that she brought these ideas to Trump’s attention a few hours ago during a phone call. She also spoke with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. “The fact that NATO has started working on this is a good initiative. Even more so,” she reiterates, demonstrating her desire to emphasize this point, “I believe it is a mistake to impose new sanctions today.” When asked about the US President’s reaction, the leader responds that something seems to have changed: “I think he was interested in listening, but it seems to me that from the American point of view, the message that was coming from this side of the Atlantic wasn’t clear. Clearly, the players who are of concern are for everyone else,” she adds, implicitly referring to Russia and China, “but this message seemed to me to be unclear at all.” She does not, however, reveal Trump’s reaction to her words. “I don’t think I can be a shorthand for what a colleague said here…” she says, with a hint of a smile.

The complexity and tension of the situation is further demonstrated by Meloni’s schedule for the next few hours, which she must fit into a final Asian mission: a meeting of European ambassadors will soon be held in Brussels to discuss how to respond to Trump’s announcement of new tariffs, which is expected to be followed by a phone call between European Union leaders. “I believe it’s very important to talk to each other at this stage.”

And the slippery slope of the situation is also demonstrated by Meloni’s terse, deliberately cold response to the League. The Northern League rejoiced over Trump’s tariffs on Europe. The leader can’t open a domestic front, but she has no desire to defend Matteo Salvini. So, when those statements are read and asked if there’s a political problem, she says only eight words before turning and leaving the room: “There is no political problem with the League.”

The escalation over Greenland overshadows the other news of the day, namely Italy’s invitation to participate in the Gaza Peace Council. “We were also invited to participate. I think Italy can play a leading role; we are ready.” Attention, however, is currently focused elsewhere: on the strategic and disputed ice owned by the Danish government, which Donald Trump has his eye on.

Sometimes to achieve de-escalation you need to escalate first.

  3. CheapAttempt2431 on

Meloni is like world champion of keeping a foot in both camps

  4. How curious from someone like her, always trying to play as many sides as humanly possible and whose minister of infrastructure is a famous Trump bootlicker

  5. OkKnowledge2064 on

Italy being vocal against a response is a terrible sign already

  6. BitRunner64 on

Just an honest mistake. Happens to all of us. I once woke up and accidentally tariffed Belize with 160% because I hadn’t had my morning coffee yet.

    Appeasement doesn’t work also.

    Look what happened in 1938

the United States is going to cause untold amounts of needless suffering

Insane how fast our own European fascists roll over and present their soft little belly as soon as the big bad fascist makes any threat. Pathetic, right-wingism really is a submissive trait deep down.

  10. gamesbrainiac on

I really want to know Italy, how did you elect this person?

  11. MarmotaBobac on

Maybe we can avoid escalation by giving Trump Sudetenland.

  12. SeveralCamera292 on

There should be no dialogue only pure escalation as sovereignty should be completely out of question! But I am open EU to agree to sell Sicily to US instead of Greenland I believe this will make Meloni happy!

  13. -Radiation on

This is why the US works hard to elect all far right governments in europe

  14. BaddonAOE on

    Unfortunatly the escalation already started.

Now, she should choose her side.

  15. “Now we must avoid escalation”

From Trump POV it means the tariffs are working you damned coward 🤦‍♂️

  16. Truffely on

Politicians all over the world are cowards.

A leftist wears a tan suit and they all riot and throw shit. And when there is a real thread they suddenly suck their dick and argue that we must see both sides.

    Pathetic.

  17. I wonder if she can keep this strategy of having one foot in each camp or she will need to choose at some point.

Trump is not listening to any logical reasons and he will continue to try to acquire Greenland.

  18. Dave_Is_Useless on

I am at the point where I want escalation because Trump and his cabinet of lunatics needs to feel real and painful consequences otherwise this will never end.

  19. SeveralHeron1746 on

Could somebody explain to me how this works? He can,t just tarrif a few countries in the EU right? it means the tarrifs will be placed on the entire EU?

  20. JerryConn on

Not slapping a hand that reaches too far invites escalation.

People here have no idea that “mistake” in her sentence in italian means something completely different, its not “you used the wrong spoon for the soup” its more like “wrong”, like literally the word “wrong”, “What trump did was wrong” is what she said.

She is literally defending those nations’s choices and being against trump, holy cow theres so much to critize about meloni & co (especially the “co”), no need for this tabloid level stuff

  22. bukowsky01 on

“[…]Defense Minister Guido Crosetto openly mocking the initiative.

“Greenland. I wonder what for? A trip?…Fifteen Italians, 15 French, 15 Germans — it sounds like the start of a joke,” Crosetto said of the Danish-led mission.”

Nice to see some European solidarity…

  23. There is no mistake in destabilizing the world long term. And the short term effects are deeply felt already.

There must be consequences. You can’t say sorry we elected a baboon and don’t mind the dire consequences for you. We didn’t mean it. Suffer it and don’t react.

  24. Almost as spineless as Erdogan. Give her another decade at this and she will have him beat i’d say.

Perhaps EU should prioritize on getting their own members on the same page before gathering more allies and eventually confronting the big threat.

  25. fusilaeh700 on

    No
    Send soldiers to protect Greenland
If they want it they have to shoot First
But Trump doesn’t have enough support
    Call the bluff

  26. Calm-Scallion-8540 on

She’s fascinated by fascists. Every time Italy has chosen that path, she’s ended up on the wrong side; she should know better.

laughable that people still believe they can reason with this con man.

why are there so many comments shitting on Meloni in this post??

She has Made VERY questionable decisons… and there is not much to defend there, actually a lot of bad stuff can be said on those regards.

But what did she do wrong here??? Before commenting, PLEASE read the entire article. She is standing strongly with europe here, and defending the attacked Countries, and not at all with Trump, even criticizing him… She is STILL trying for mediation and trying to understand Trump‘s ridicolous actions, yes… that is not good… But don’t be so impulsive with criticizing everything she does…

She has done a pretty nice move, I’d give her credit at least for this one.

but if there’s anything I missed tell me.
