Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent amplified President Donald Trump’s message to European allies that the US won’t back down on taking over Greenland, saying the continent is too weak to ensure its security.
Bessent all but dismissed European Union threats to halt a tariff deal reached between Trump and the bloc last year, telling NBC News that the US president is using strategic leverage to get what he wants.
“First of all, the trade deal hasn’t been finalized, and an emergency action can be very different from another trade deal,” Bessent said Sunday in an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press. Trump “leverages his emergency powers to do this,” he said.

“European allies enjoy a significant hard power advantage over Russia by almost
every measure” – US National Security Strategy 2025
They lulled Europe to be a weak passive consumer
> “Europeans project weakness, US projects strength,” he said. “The president believes enhanced security is not possible without Greenland being part of the US.”
Strength? Is that what Americans think they are projecting?
Because to me, it looks like insecurity and compensation.
So the US will now annex Canada and Estonia? They can’t defend themselves too.
Perhaps EU can always be stronger with an ally like China i guess.
Perhaps this is what US is wishing for.
But at this point it does not matter whether Europe is weak or not. What matters is that the US stopped to be the provider of security. This way or another, Europe needs to build the new security arrangement. There may be difficult days ahead, but let’s be honest – European civilization exists for a good couple thousands of years. This is just a hickup in history.
And this is where MAGA logic fails – as all populists, they think it is possible to eat the cake and then still have the cake.
The really stupid thing is that it has been US policy for decades that they should remain weak and rely on them.
Now they are complaining about the very thing they created.
So now Europe has no option but to rebuild their forces and be an actual threat to the USA.
Funny how you turn weak if an ally stabs you in the back right?
Oh, dear! They really don’t get it, do they? Europe will not give in, because backing down will spell the end of the European Union, so there is no way they are going to give in to the second-rank mobsters in the WH.
On the contrary, the more the US pushes this agenda, the more united Europe will stand, bolstered by public support, which favours the EU standing up to the US.
Europe is strong as it is.
IDK what cool-aid people have drunk, but we have a stronger army (more manpower and reserves) and a stronger Atlantic navy.
We have better arctic capabilities and equipment. The US can probably muster few thousand troops with an artic training while Nordics alone have hundreds of thousands and equipment to spare.
It all feels so gringe.
U.S. projects obedience to Putin.
So, the rational thing from Bessent’s perspective would be for Europe to hurt the US, to show we can? Right?
The U.S. has alway had the opportunity to build as much defenses and put as many troops they’d like in Greenland. It’s part of the 1951 agreement between Denmark/Greenland and the U.S.
The U.S. has however, like every other NATO-member bordering the arctic, gradually built down their military presence to keep the arctic peaceful and non-provocative, but no one has ever hindered the U.S. in rebuilding their presence there, installing missile shields, store nuclear weapons or build new infrastructure.
They’re perfectly welcome to do that, so that whole argument is demonstrably false.
This is about two things, probably:
There’s valuable minerals there, but again, the U.S. is welcome to set up mines and get those minerals together with Greenland. So this is also dubious.
The second is because of a story as old as time. A narcissist nears the end of his life, and demands his name in the history books as a great ruler so he will be remembered for all time. That’s it. Oh, and it’s a great temporary distraction from the Epstein-files and his Gestapo-goons killing white mothers…
Bessent is literally the last person who should call Europe “weak” in Trump’s regime. He runs our treasury, which currently has over $38 trillion in debt and by the end of Trump’s term could have a worse debt-to-GDP ratio than Greece (who’s currently running a budget surplus). Not to mention the financial nuke Europe has over us with $2.3 trillion in US bonds and the fact the Stoxx 600 Europe outperformed the S&P last year
It would be hilarious if the US forces the EU to finally build an european army the same way Russia forced finnland and sweden to join NATO.
That’s it, the mask is finally coming off. The USA has gone full fascist. Time to cut them off.
Weak Europe. Yeah we need to be more alpha in expressing ourselves. More shouty and dumb and of course threatening in our behavior.
When you are strong, look weak.
When you are weak, look strong.
They are projecting being nazi and in search of young boys and girls to violate.
That’s all the word see in dementia donny, and the nazi couple musk and miller.

This guy? 😂
This is all about stealing rare-earth metals. Read which US oligarchs want it.
If the US are so strong, why do they need other “weaker” countries to become part of the US for their protection? That sounds like something a weak country would do, bunch of losers…
Nato’s Article 5 already puts Greenland under US umbrella, for what it is worth. That’s a poor excuse to rob it.
“the continent is too weak to ensure its security”
What a backwards argument, and are we talking security against SEALs or seals?
Just another minion trying to justify his job with the orange turd.
If Europe was weak they’d ut have taken it, the fact that they are bitching is because we’re not weak.
