They could have “digital autonomy” tomorrow with linux and open source in general. But I guess that flies in the face of their conflicting blatant desire for european digital authoritarianism – the current active drive toward banning unbroken encryption and chat control etc. Can’t do that without outlawing linux and open source in europe too – can’t have any smart kid able to just patch out backdoors and add unbroken encryption with widely-available open source libraries.

Good. We can do better. We invented Skype and it was glorious. Better that it had stayed in EU’s hands. The current mess that is Teams is an absolute butchering of a superior system from decades earlier. No idea how Microsoft fumbled it so bad.

Honestly, so many apps today seem to be racing to the bottom of the barrel when it comes to actually providing a service users can be happy with. We can do better.

And at my university in Madrid we just got rid of all the telephones in favor of using the Teams phone system…

I support this 100%. But I also remember that when other countries seek to restrict US-based social media platforms, messengers, or websites, we cry about liberal values and human rights. I hope this situation helps us understand that often people are suspicious of US and its digital products for a good reason.

Very cool to see many of these initiatives lately. It would good if this was coordinated on the European level to send a unified message and give European and open source providers more planning security.

  6. right example. we need to incentivize businesses to get rid of american software too. once the ball starts rolling, it will collapse US tech

Watch the tech bro’s kick off about Trump, any day now.

Big tech signed its own death warrant when it helped a totalitarian regime overthrow the oldest democracy in the world / bent the knee instantaneously.

In the short term de-americanizing our online lives will be a national security priority for every country.

But no for-profit company or government will ever be able to be trusted with the kind of power social media gives them to surveil and manipulate public opinion, determine which topics are permitted to be discussed and who is allowed to discuss them, especially not with the advent of advanced multi-modal AI.

Digital autonomy at the household level using FOSS tools is the logical way to counteract this.

    Solid.

Once American companies are boycotted en mass by the western world, they’ll feel the pinch and be more likely to crash and burn until they realize they can’t side with Right wing fascism

America is so fucking short-sighted now. I’m so sorry. As an American I’m excited to see the platforms and safety features you come up with.

The problem with these announcements is that they never seem to have an actual comparable product to replace it.
