Fair but Provide security against online threats first

    >A similar debate is occurring across the US. Michigan has taken the most radical stance so far, proposing a bill to ban not only VPN usage but also the promotion of the technology.

This is insane. Why not just ban people from the internet altogether while we’re at it?

It’s pretty clear the end goal is gonna be state control software installed on devices on they start to complain that the VPN ban is ineffective

I am sure China follows this with interrest, they probably want to learn how to control their own population even better.

Aaaand that’s a step too far. Banning VPNs or mandating logging is a disgusting over reach if it happens. The only compromise I could see would be to limit the available VPN servers to France but still keeping them strictly private.

Well, that will be really annoying and not fun.

Of course, this will be used on Yellow Vests more often and more aggressively than islamists

Man, everything is just getting worse and worse, and it’s the same literally everywhere you go.

  9. “For the children” is just an excuse. They don’t like you making it hard for them to monitor you.

  10. Towards the people who were happy about the uderage ban, this what you get when you give an inch.

Governments around the globe are desperately trying to extinguish and privacy we have. The oligarchs are scared we’re going to overthrow them, thus palintar will monitor your every thought

Oh yeah, because of course 13 something years old kids are quite likely to pay for and set up fairly sophisticated VPN handshake points to access porn and Tiktok reels, we must protect them at all cost!

Age restriction and personal ID collection is the dumbest way to regulate social media.

For fuck’s sake, we already have the UK to show us how little that works, and how liberticide these laws are.

I’m old enough to remember back when the internet police was a meme.

Let me guess, there’s fine print excluding decision makers yet again. Almost as if it’s pushed hard by lobbyists with promises it won’t effect the people in charge in any way. A new internet hierarchy of untouchable nobles vs the plebs. Yeah we’ll see how well that goes once a few codes get reverse engineered.

Liberté, égalité, fraternité… I guess not anymore.

And it’s not just France… The age of freedom seems to be well and truly over.

Fascinating that this is worrying behavior but governments wanting to force people to ID verify so they can scroll instagram is just good because “the kids”

Im getting tired of getting all the downsides of an autocracy with none of the benefits.

  19. I lived in China for 10 years, until early 2020. After years of going through VPN hoops, I was glad to be back to the “freedom internet”. Well, that lasted long… It’s only been 5 years and now this is beginning to look a lot like China.

You must only see the side of things we want you to see. Zero crime statistics in france

  21. Fucking bootlickers in the other comment sections will get what they always wanted, total state control, sooner rather than later. Of course to protect the children.

Clearly don’t understand what they are.
Plenty are used for corporate, internal network access etc.

VPN services also don’t sit on one ip – streaming services have been trying to block them for decades.

  23. soundssarcastic on

Ah there it is. The “Protect The Kids” bill was just a “Take Away Privacy and Rights” bill afterall

Somehow I do have the feeling, that this is the right way…. in the long run. It feels weid now. But I have the feeling that everything we are pursuing as society in general, being driven by technogloy – into uncharted territory of human-machine interaction, will come tumbling down on us.

Banning vpns is almost impossible, china has been trying to ban them for decades, save with Russia and Iran, and they haven’t succeeded
