      > The government is today (Wednesday 4 February) publishing a first-of-its-kind framework which aims to stimulate private investment in innovative nuclear technologies across the country, providing a clear route to market and support for credible projects to get them off the ground.

      > To speed up deployment of advanced nuclear and attract private investment, government is launching a “pipeline” of credible projects that meet essential readiness criteria. A “concierge-style” service will help developers understand requirements around UK planning, regulation and fuel, as well as enabling them to crowd-in private investment.

      > Advanced nuclear technologies – including advanced, small, and micro modular reactors – are manufactured in factories meaning they could be built quicker and at a lower cost, with skilled jobs located across multiple regions. They can provide clean energy to the grid or directly to private industrial consumers to meet growing clean energy demand and help decarbonise industry.

      > It follows the biggest government investment in nuclear power for a generation, greenlighting Sizewell C in Suffolk and selecting Wylfa in North Wales to host the country’s first small modular reactors.

      > * Plans to speed up building of pioneering nuclear technology to power AI boom and grow economy with clean energy
      > * Government to recognise most credible advanced nuclear projects to help unlock private investment and get projects off the ground
      > * New nuclear projects could create thousands of jobs across the country as part of nuclear “golden age”

Reminder to all those who think that we are only investing into renewables and thus leaving us vulnerable for the changes in weather: no, the government isn’t just concentrating on renewables.

Why then have the cut the budget for the National Nuclear Laboratory in Preston? One hand invests in the future, the other cuts funding to the leading research institute for nuclear power in the UK.  Insane

Of course nuclear waste isn’t a problem. Will we ship it to Malaysia so it can be dumped in the sea like out plastic waste collected for recycling

Can we stop calling Rolls Royce small! Their reactor is over 400MWe now! About the same size as a magnox!

Last Energy at just 20MW probably sits more in the micro I guess.

Finally, a good policy. Can’t wait for it to be screwed up down the line.

The UK’s energy prices are way out of line with the rest of the developed world, bringing them down would be a boon to the economy and everyone will feel the benefit.

      Good.

Sooner we’re off fossil fuels and away from the tyrants that supply it, the better.

And this is what competent government looks like, as opposed to Tory dithering and can kicking down the road because they’re ideologically opposed to spending money.

UK Government finds new, interesting ways to sell the country’s assets to private owners.

For the love of god, make it stop.

The Labour government are doing some really good stuff. Yet at the same time the same party will think it’s a good idea to hire Peter Mandleson 3 times. Morons

“Unlock advanced nuclear” makes it sound like a Civilisation 2/Factorio research objective

Is there any evidence that nuclear power will actually get cheaper? We’ve been hearing about cheap nuclear for decades but at the minute it’s more expensive than renewables

    12. quarky_uk on

Incredible. Lets hope they can sort out the NIMBY problem too so that we can actually see real progress. A good nuclear strategy is imperative to the future economy.

It is surprising that Scotland and Germany are still keeping their stance on this.

    13. Am I wrong or Theresa May tried to put forward something quite similar? Shame it didn’t go ahead as we would probably be starting to see the results of that.

I’m of the opinion that Nuclear (especially Thorium) is a worse option than renewables but still miles better than fossil fuels. Fossil fuels come not only with global warming and air pollution but reliance on some of the most corrupt governments like Russia, Saudi and USA.

Brill ill be waiting 40 years before any are online when we could have just built solar and wind now for less.

I just hope there’s plenty of education about it, just because there’s so much fear around nuclear power because of Chernobyl and Fukushima.

      Realistically, they’re incredibly rare events.

Bonus though, if something does go wrong, I’ve got my “I bring you love” Mr Burns halloween costume sorted!

A Good thing but one serious nitpick why can’t this be public investment (i.e direct gov investment) take out a big loan and construct three sites for example under a British owned public energy company and put them on those sites, hire and employ directly through that company.

    18. judochop1 on

Wow, like large infrastructure projects are a way to get money into local areas, train apprentices and upskill workers. mad, why has no one thought about this before?

oh, they did and fucked about with HS2

Advanced nuclear what?? Nuclear is not a noun…

It’s like those annoying twots that say “Are you on social?”

    20. Ornery-Air-6968 on

It’s genuinely refreshing to see decisive action on energy after years of delay. Getting off volatile fossil fuel markets is a huge win for both our economy and national security. This is the kind of forward-thinking policy we’ve been needing.

    21. cagemeplenty on

This shouldn’t be handled by private companies. This should be handled and managed by the government and be a public utility.

      > A “concierge-style” service will help developers understand requirements around UK planning, regulation and fuel,…

      > Developers can … submit proposals to join the pipeline … which will then be assessed by experts in government and Great British Energy-Nuclear according to key criteria such as technology status, developer capability, and financing plans.

Seems to be an acceptance we have so much bureaucratic and administrative overhead that it’s been slowing down projects and dissuading investment.

So there needs to be fast tracks though it for nationally critical infrastructure. But surely why not other things?

Its also quite funny to me that the solution to excessive bureaucracy is more bureaucracy.

It’s a nice plan but I’m not going to be convinced until this country proves it can follow through on *any* nuclear project that doesn’t end up 10x over budget and a decade late.
