Gardaí and TUSLA have massively changed their approaches to recording and investigating sexual offences. There’s also been major pushes for people to report historical incidents, particularly from religious and educational institutions.

We have judges that are incredibly lenient on sexual offences… does this outcome surprise anyone at all? Getting rid of the rubbish judges is the first step to resolve this. The second is to ban social media for under 16s and stop treating men in this country like they are entitled to the world. I have noticed a whole lot of mama boy energy from men aged like 30-50 in Ireland, like they were never told they did something wrong.

>It said, however, that these numbers should be seen in the context of the rise in the reporting of sexual offences in Ireland in the past decade, including the reporting of incidents that occurred many years earlier.
It’s important to note that people have to trust the system before they will even report such crimes in the first place. Ireland’s doing a far better job now of dealing with (and recording) these offences, so more people are willing to come forward.

I never really see the point of comparing with other nations.
Like its not Apples for Apples..
Ireland is a far different nation than say England. Just London alone has 9 million people, almost twice the population of Ireland
Then you magnify it further. Look at the “average crime stats”. Dublin and one other county (I think Waterford) ar ethe only two areas above the average. 95% of Ireland is below average for crime rate…
Then take Dublin, it has tourists, it more densely populated, so whilst its far wealthier than Roscommon, crime not just poverty, its over crowding, inequality etc…
it was like when we were comparing Covid rates….Australia was always going to have lower Covid rates than a more densely populated country. Regardless of whether they were wearing maks or not…
Same can be said with crime rates…

I’d imagine the sexual offence rate is due to the higher trust in the system here in Ireland than many countries and the fact that it would be reported more here.
Homicide is something where reports are always going to be much more in line with actual numbers so it makes sense that Ireland is so much lower in that case, as one of the safest countries in Europe.

I get that there’s a better reporting in Ireland and all that but there has to be some correlation with people having over dozens to 50 and 100 + convictions floating around! A lot of them are known by victims coming from domestic abuse. How many of them get a pass once they say they deeply regret their actions worded by their solicitor?

The problem with comparing sexual offences is many times it’s more a reflection on people feeling comfortable enough to report it.
Countries where women feel (very) scared to report will always appear to have less sexual offences.

Does that include the online ones, caught with porn etc.

You’d swear we’re the only EU country with immigrants, going by the racists in these comments blaming it on immigrants.

I wonder how much of that higher offence rate is by repeat offenders who were left off by one notoriously lenient judge with just the “boys will be boys” defence.

That’s a good thing. Homicide rates are seen as a fairly solid metric as they rarely go unreported. Sexual offences rarely go reported, so it’d seem with the new reforms to the judicial system the rates of reporting have gone way up.
