"Se scade, scade," Lo ha detto il presidente degli Stati Uniti Donald Trump nella sua intervista al New York Times quando gli è stato chiesto delle sue intenzioni di estendere il trattato New START che si è concluso ufficialmente il 5 febbraio.
La scadenza porrebbe fine all’ultimo accordo bilaterale che limita gli arsenali nucleari russo e statunitense – che insieme rappresentano l’80% del totale mondiale.
Il presidente russo Vladimir Putin ha annunciato il suo sostegno all’estensione del trattato a settembre.
"Consideriamo questo un argomento molto importante," ha detto il portavoce del Cremlino Dmitry Peskov, aggiungendo che la Russia "continua ad attendere una risposta dagli Stati Uniti"
Il nuovo START (Trattato sulla riduzione delle armi strategiche) è entrato in vigore nel 2011 quando Washington e Mosca hanno deciso di porre un limite alle loro armi nucleari strategiche.
Il trattato limita ogni paese a 1.550 testate nucleari schierate, 800 lanciatori schierati e non schierati e 700 bombardieri pesanti schierati, missili balistici intercontinentali e lanciati da sottomarini.
Sopravvissuto al suo periodo iniziale di 10 anni, il trattato è stato prorogato per altri 5 anni nel febbraio 2021 con il sostegno di entrambe le parti. Tuttavia, il Cremlino ha notoriamente sospeso la sua partecipazione alle ispezioni del Nuovo START dopo l’inizio della guerra su vasta scala contro l’Ucraina.

Russia violates every agreement it signs.
If Russia abided by it’s legal obligations there would be no invasion of Ukraine.

Moscow has never cared about START, they are only in it because they know that rhe West is like a stupid little kid that belives anything.
USSR bankrupted itself on Cold War paranoia stockpiling (as Ukrainians know all too well, from having been manufacturing a lot, to current war and old stockpiles getting used).
If Russia starts to build more nuclear weapons, it will bankrupt itself on this.
A stupid blow to disarmament.

The other practical matter is that neither side can just start building new warheads. It would take a long time to rebuild that capacity. Besides, they both have bigger arsenals than they will ever use so what’s the point?
beware /s: to paraphrase putler, why should the world exist as long russia is allowed to be in it.
Perhaps the internal logic goes something like this:
Any money Russia spends on a new nuclear program will be money squandered.
