Starlink terminals used by Russian military units to provide satellite internet on the battlefield have been shut down, according to an adviser to Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

“It’s not a problem the enemy faces but a disaster, troop command has collapsed and assault operations have halted in many areas,” Serhiy Beskrestnov told the news outlet RBK on Thursday. He said Ukraine’s military, which has Starlink access, faced some issues which he said were due to commanders not promptly renewing private subscriptions.

While Starlink isn’t available officially for use by the Russian military, [reports began emerging](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-02-11/ukraine-claims-russia-uses-musk-s-starlink-terminals-near-front) in 2024 that troops had acquired the devices and were using them for internet access. The Russian Defense Ministry didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on its forces’ current access to the system.

Beskrestnov’s words come days after Kyiv [notified](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/T9TP4KT96OSK) Elon Musk’s [SpaceX](https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/711339Z:US), which manufactures and operates Starlink, that some of its devices had been included in Russian drones used to attack Ukraine. Beskrestnov told Bloomberg last week that the Ukrainian military found Starlinks on Russian drones capable of flying up to 500 kilometers.

Fedorov said in a [post](https://x.com/fedorovmykhailo/status/2019349344319586574?s=46&t=RHMpDgwjjq6zrajBQvjJ1A) on X on Thursday that authorized terminals in the country continued to operate. On Thursday, SpaceX also published instructions on how to register devices, which Musk then shared in a [post](https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2019209803403506086) on X urging Starlink customers in Ukraine to follow them.

Russia has pounded Ukraine’s cities in air raids using drones and missiles in recent weeks, striking heating and power facilities as residents [grapple with freezing temperatures](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2026-02-04/ukrainians-defy-russia-s-attempts-to-freeze-them-into-submission). These attacks have continued as Ukrainian, Russian and US delegations meet for another round of talks in Abu Dhabi amid US President Donald Trump’s bid to bring an end to Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The world needs to lose access to Starlink and find local suppliers.
