    > A new clearing-style system will be introduced to match young people who miss out on an apprenticeship with alternative placements, the government has said.

    > Similar to university and college clearing – a process which matches students with institutions that have unfilled places – the online platform will provide information about available roles in their chosen area of interest.

    > Ministers hope the pilot scheme will make apprenticeships easier to navigate and more appealing to young people weighing up their options.

    > The new system, to be run in partnership with employers and mayoral strategic authorities, will also inform young people about potential earnings in the roles and long-term career prospects.

    > It is part of government reforms aimed at delivering 50,000 more apprenticeships for young people, backed by £725m of funding.

Waiting to hear how this is also bad news.

This is such a great change that I’m kind of amazed no one did this before Labour.

Why just young people?, there should also be a national scheme for 30+ to retrain also.

Would be interested to understand how this could work given that apprenticeships are supply-led rather than demand-led like university.

Not like there are loads of spare apprentices/jobs around just waiting to accept anyone onto them and start paying them.

Sounds great but given how competitive placements are, id be suprised if there were many places to clear unless by alternate provisions, they mean non apprenticeship courses? I hope people dont get railroaded into courses that dont fit them well.

Another good change would be revamping the find an apprenticeship service and advertising it to employers. When I was getting my apprenticeship, you had to search for the specific keywords in listing exactly. When I did find the listings I was looking for, the closest one for the apprenticeship spec I was aiming for was over 100 miles away. Eventually I was able to get one off site in the nearest city to where I lived.

I really enjoyed being let go from my apprenticeship when it ended. Nothing like working for a year achieving the qualification you wanted and then getting let go at the start of the new year because the department “is overstaffed”.
