    1. I imagine that to most it’s just a generic symbol for ’america’. I wouldn’t expect any finn to be familiar with its political background in the states. Some are, though, so I’d call it inconclusive.

Impossible to say. Could be that this person just thinks the flag looks cool, or maybe they’re a huge nazi. Or something in between. Either way, I wouldn’t worry about it.

    3. At least 3 options:

      1. It’s a bit like wearing Che Guevara shirt. No idea who the guy is, but it’s trending somewhere.
      2. Fan of some American ideals like cars & music.
      3. Racist idiot.

It is used among some 50”s/rockabilly/american car enthusiasts. They do not usually understand the bad connotations this flag has. No need to worry.

    5. It is a symbol of the absolute ugliness of humanity which anyone should be embarrassed to be associated with

    6. AuroraBorrelioosi on

It’s culturally a music thing in Finland, associated with rockabilly. It’s possible your neighbor is a racist, but the musical genre is the original association in Finnish culture, from before American history and the context of the flag was widely understood, it was just adopted as a superficial symbol for aesthetics.

Impossible to say. Could just be someone who was a fan of the Dukes of Hazzard way back, and still doesn’t understand the connotation of the flag. Could be someone who sees the flag as representing some kind of rebellious freedom. Could be they just like the looks of it. Outside of the US, for many people it’s just some flag, after all.

Or it could indeed be some racist knob. We can’t tell from here.

    8. SparkyFrog on

It’s not really a pro slavery thing here, the guy probably has some vague rebellion or southern US interests and doesn’t think further than that.

    9. Euronymous316 on

Pretty common for anyone who likes Pantera or old American cars – you will see it at family rockabilly events. There is hardly ever anything racist about this flag when used outside the USA.

    10. HopeSubstantial on

Some 80s motorbike hippies atleast used that flag to represent American freedom and way of life.

That flag never got racist tone on it in Finland when it was most popular.

However people who used that flag for that purpose are only driving rollators in 2026.

Anither possibility its some edgy pro condederacy supporter who loves to use N word and other edgy stuff online.

    11. UndeniableLie on

90% chance of wannabe white supremacist. 8% chance of someone just stupid enough not knowing what the flag repressents. 2% chance it is about musical taste or american freedom. And I’m being generous on the last option.

I also saw it with some idiots with big SUVs and trucks having some sort of meeting on a Lidl parking lot in Espoo (Lommila). Took a photo, maybe I can still find it.

    13. LonelyRudder on

Probably just [a rockabilly rebel](https://youtu.be/hO3sHO8ZuIc) (check the backside of the bass showing at 2:35). Might be a racist too, but the flag does not automatically mean that, it is just a redneck rocker thing here.

    14. ApprehensiveAd6476 on

He’s either a fanboy of great old american times or he actually supports those ideologies. Either way, I would exercise caution around him.

    15. internal_eulogy on

As others have said, it’s often used by fans of rockabilly music, old American cars, and general Americana aesthetics… buuuut, the overlap between those people and people who long for the days of government-issued racial segregation is pretty substantial. Your neighbor might be a well-meaning but ill-informed fan of some of the aforementioned things who simply doesn’t understand the political meaning of this flag, but chances are they’re just plain racist and proud of it.

    16. I’m an American living in the American South. My mother is Finnish, so I hang out here sometimes. I’m white as it gets, but if I see anyone flying that flag around here, which is not uncommon, it’s a clear signal that they are a racist dumbass and I steer clear of them. Of course, as others have said, someone may be displaying that flag in Finland for other reasons.

    17. Salt-Composer-1472 on

It’s the “allowed” nazi flag. I have no idea what these commenter are saying, that’s always been a hatesymbol-flag in Finland.

    18. AirportCreep on

It doesn’t really matter what kind of person you live next door too. In Finland we don’t interact with our neighbours, so it’s not a non issue.

    19. Mediocre_Rock7114 on

For me it was rock’n roll and “we don’t like the government too much”. Or we who live more rural knows more about the world.

What we are supposed to think is slavery but I won’t.

    20. If it’s possible, you could try knocking the door and have a friendly chat with them for a vibe check, so that you know what you’re committing yourself into or have the option to look elsewhere while it’s still easy.

When I was in my teens and saw the flag in the wild, the part you’re worried about didn’t really connect to me as much as just the general redneckery, muscle cars, Dukes of Hazzard, music and the like that the flag was a part of. For discrimination especially there were and there are other symbols and hints, but not really that one among them.

    21. Pirunpoika on

Many people here have said it but I’ll say it myself as I have friends who like the Pantera band and are musicians and use the flag, then there are these car guys who have nice American cars and that includes a flag like that. Then there are some rockabilly guys who also use it. I don’t know much more but I know people who use this flag in some way and I can tell you that they are not racists at all. Of course there can always be exceptions but I would think that racists would use a different flag in here

    22. sultan_of_gin on

Most likely just rockabilly or maybe a harley enthusiast. Never seen it used in any other context in finland.

    23. tipareth1978 on

Hasn’t there been a weird thing in Northern Europe where people are obsessed with southern US culture and the confederacy in the civil war?

    24. timpaan96 on

Most of the time it’s because someone likes American cars but very rarely some racist person

    25. DaWaaaagh on

Lot of european countries imported them as form of rebel youth culture and music from america around the late 20th century without any understanding about the historical roots of such symbols.

So mostly the flags you see are remnants of that like in the aesthetics of Raggare music subculture. At leat my own parents had no idea about the confederate flags racism until I explained it to them. So there’s a chance that it’s ignorance.

But it’s also possible that the person having the confederate flags is just racist
