      Swiss voters will get to decide in June whether 10 million people is all the country can bear.

      The proposal — backed by the right-wing People’s Party, or SVP — is going to a national vote after supporters gathered enough signatures under Switzerland’s direct democracy system.

      Both the government and parliament are against the so-called “sustainability initiative” to cap the population, largely shutting out immigrants when the 10-million number is reached. Still, it has the support of about 48% of voters, according to a poll in December. The vote will take place on June 14, the government announced Wednesday.

      Infinite population/economic growth is impossible in a finite world. Cities and countries have infrastructure and environmental limits – water, sanitation, housing (this is not Swiss case) It seems Swiss achieved certain level/balance that they are broadly happy with and prefer to preserve.

      It is reasonable for a country to consider a population cap and Switzerland has the right to decide this democratically.

      I guess there will be mandatory death booths at every corner once natural population growth brings the population to 10 million? 

      And a random lottery started to determine who lives and who dies, to keep the population below 10 million?

      It’s just populism. There is no real chance to reach the cap of 10 million.

      It’s just a way for SVP (the far right party in Switzerland) to claim they do something without doing anything.

      >The permanent resident population of Switzerland must not exceed ten million people before 2050. From 2050 onwards, the Federal Council may adjust the limit annually by decree to take account of the birth surplus. The Confederation shall ensure that the limit is complied with.

      >If the permanent resident population of Switzerland exceeds nine and a half million people before 2050, the Federal Council and the Federal Assembly shall, within the scope of their powers, take measures to ensure compliance with the limit specified in Article 73a paragraph 1, in particular in the areas of asylum and family reunification. (…) From the moment they exceed this limit, provisionally admitted persons will not be granted a residence or settlement permit, Swiss citizenship or any other right of residence. This is subject to the mandatory provisions of international law.

      >If the permanent resident population of Switzerland exceeds the limit specified in Article 73a paragraph 1, the Federal Council and the Federal Assembly shall take all measures at their disposal to ensure compliance with the limit. Paragraph 1 shall apply accordingly. However, international agreements within the meaning of paragraph 1 shall be terminated at the earliest possible date, in particular the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration of 19 December 2018 (UN Migration Pact), if Switzerland has signed it. If the limit value specified in Article 73a(1) has still not been complied with two years after it was first exceeded and no exemption or safeguard clauses have been negotiated or invoked by that time to ensure compliance with the limit value specified in Article 73a(1), the Agreement of 21 June 19993 between the Swiss Confederation, of the one part, and the European Community and its Member States, of the other part, on the free movement of persons (Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons) shall also be terminated at the earliest possible date.

      TL:DR according to the right wing populists: we do not like when foreign workers bring their family, we do not like free movement with the EU and we do not like international migration treaties

      As a Swiss I really hope we’re not dumb enough to accept this, because our population is aging rapidly and I don’t want to live in a society with 8m pensioneers in the future.

      Fun fact that max population Norway can bear without Food imports is 2.5 Million People.

      This is stupid, does it take in consideration the age and the professions of the people? Sure we can be 10mil, but what if there aren’t enough doctors? What if the population are mostly aging one?

      Just a thought, but even with our history of wars, famines, natural disasters, and disease which have killed off a few billion and any future progeny they might have had, we’re still reproducing fast enough to increase the global population by billions.

      this seems like a wildly stupid idea you cap population at 10 million but what happens when the majority of those are not working age anymore and population shifts?

      This is dumb

      With their salary levels and business sectors, they are a choice for the most attractive migrants there are – highly educated young workforce from industrialized countries. Their social security system is not as easy to move into as the German or French. Not being an EU member still gives them space to maneuver around poverty migration, while free movement with EU makes it easy to attract educated migrants. Their infrastructure construction is relatively efficient. Unemployment is low. The education system is top tier.

      Tweak migration policy a bit and increase housing construction, and you are looking at a success story that rivals the migration success of the US from WW2 to the early 2000s
