  1. At least somebody thinks of those poor poor oh so ApOlItIcal neutral sportsmen. Their feefees got hurt by being reminded of what their peers do.

    But this is ok?

    – ** Petr Gumennik (figure skating)** is connected to Ilya Averbukh, a coach sanctioned by Ukraine for his role in pro-war events and performances in occupied Ukrainian territories. Gumennik has also performed in a Russian military uniform and worked with Averbukh on recent projects
    .
    – **Savelii Korostelev (cross-country skiing)** has liked pro-Putin and pro-military content on social media and was described as an “army skier” by his club, CSKA, which is affiliated with the Russian armed forces
    .
    – **Kseniia Korzhova (speed skating)** liked pro-war content from Nikita Nagorny, a sanctioned gymnast and former head of the Russian youth military organization Yunarmia, who is accused of involvement in the deportation of Ukrainian children
    .
    – **Dariya Nepryaeva (cross-country skiing)** attended a training camp in Crimea, which is illegally occupied by Russia, and was featured in a state-backed TV report about the camp
    .
-**Adeliia Petrosian (figure skating)** held a masterclass at a Moscow festival that raises funds for the Russian military

There are so many layers of wrong here.

Wearing the picture of dead athletes would have been considered a positive message in any circumstances. But because they died during a war, it’s considered offensive? Did they choose their way to die?

And, even if they did. Since when speaking against war is a political message? Since when do we have to accept innocent people being killed, because it’s too political?

I have another take on that. The IOC refuses to let the message of peace to go through. It sends another political message: War is fine in today’s world and we have to live with it.

Go ahead M. Trump. The IOC, just like FIFA, won’t blame you for invading Greenland, Venezuela, Canada or whoever you want.

The world has descended into madness.

  4. IOC taking the side of a terrorist state. The Olympic spirit is dead and buried.

Every competitor in that event should have refused to participate in that event.

I was sorry he had to fight this alone.

  6. Welcome to 2026 where being against war, pedophilia and genocide are now political positions that you can’t express.

    Good thing about that?
A lot more attention to the matter.

    Fuck war.

COI is like top 5 most corrupt institutions in the world

Those rules exist for a reason. It’s not the European Olympics.

Surely the IOC (and whoever lobbied for this decision behind the scenes) knew this would only increase the attention on the controversy instead of suppresing tthe message, so what was the real point of grasping so hard at straws to justify this ban? Just to show whose side they are on?

  11. The-Nihilist-Marmot on

I give up, man. It’s so much awful everywhere that I’m going numb.

  12. IOC: We will ban Russia for invading Ukrainian

IOC: We will ban Ukrainians for reminding people that Russia is still invading Ukraine

Damn I knew they told him he couldn’t wear it. Didn’t hear this got him DQed. Lets hope for some Streisand effect.

  14. DoughnutSad6336 on

Well, that’s good, more people paid attention, he achieved his goal. But he still had no chance of winning the competition.

  15. TianZiGaming on

Not sure how they classified that as political. There aren’t even any slogans or words on it? Looks like just pictures of people who were killed.

  16. Syndacate4 on

I understand the anger around this, but it is justifiedto ban IMO. If they allowed this, what is then stopping e.g the Israeli teams putting oct 7th victims on their helmets to condem palastine, indians putting terrorist victims on theirs to condem pakistan, russians putting Ukrainians on there helmets as a reversal, Americans putting drug deaths on theirs to make some kind of bullshit argument about ice, ect, ect. If they allowed this, they would be forced to take a stance on comlex geopolitical issues, because as much as israel has commited warcrimes in gaza can they prove its a political statment rather then a memorial? Same with a hundred other countries, some may be justified, others may be rephresniable, but if they pick and chose what they allow any idea of political impartiality goes out the window. Its a shame, but it is what it is, and unless you want the Olympics to make such political choices (and almost certainly cause a wode boycott and end the games as many nations would be angered) you just have to accept no politics means no politics even if you (and I) agree with the message.

  17. “No politics in sports” has long become a defense for brutal dictatorships. He chose what’s more important.

  18. Jaggiboi on

The IOC is morally bankrupt. But so is basically any sports federation sadly

  19. Guys I don’t like it either, but rules are rules. The athlete was even warned beforehand but did so anyway.

They are doing this to make sure that they don’t set a precedent for allowing others to misuse it for more politically messages.

  20. a1000milesaway on

Great idea for a new vinyl wrap for helmets.
    Ukraine forever!

  21. is anyone surprised, after they allowed Israel to participate?
