After telling people that “get the bag and fuck off” is the new mantra instead of society-wide solidarity, now the Christian Democrats want laborers to work for a common good that they themselves privatized and funneled to their donors.

It would be hilarious if this weren’t the most powerful party in Germany.

  2. Sounds oddly similar to a Farage speech in the UK the other day. Specifically the attack in expectations to have a “work life balance”. What was the point in spending the last several decades bringing in all kinds of worker protections across the EU if politicians are just going to mug them off when the going gets tough as we won’t work American/Chinese hours.

Counterpoint: tax the rich more, and invest more.

Of course, Merz, as a fiscal conservative, is never gonna do that. No, just squeeze blood from a stone and reduce already asphyxiated social welfare expenses in an effort to keep the credit rating down. Long term plans for the future? Why? The term limits for government are only 4 years, so the future is someone else’s problem.

He does that about once or twice a week, it’s also a bit of a dementia problem. Best to ignore it.

Modern politics: Gotta work more! Gotta have more children! Gotta pay more taxes! Gotta work more! Gotta breed more!

I’m willing to work much more as a billionaire: 16 hours a day spitting BS on twitter and being exempt from taxes because what if I otherwise leave.

  6. Equivalent-Role4632 on

That’s always the solution isn’t it. In Denmark they even removed a national holiday because on that ne we could earn so much money. They keep screwing up the budget and we have to pay for it.

Fuck merz. He’s a literal blackrock employee and shill.

Seriously, even though I found myself agreeing with him on a few of his views on other topics, this man is a corporate shill and a despicable human being.

I don’t like him one bit and I wouldn’t ever trust him to fully oppose the afd in a decade, when they might be claiming more power.

I see him as a dude who will join their coalition in 10-20 years, in order to provide short term safety for his corporate overlords.

Nothing about that weird ugly man suggests integrity or humaneness or even respect.

    Ugh!

It’s always these bloody right wing career politicians that have never worked a single hour in their whole life saying this.

At this point it’s a running gag in Germany to remind everyone that Friedrich thinks we are lazy and should work more.

I don’t know why people voted for this party in the first place after what they did(n’t do) but they are doing their best to be in the opposition again.

    Señor Merz,

The reason Germany’s economy isn’t productive enough isn’t because people don’t work enough; it’s because that which Germany produces isn’t profitable enough. Instead of telling people to work more, invest in productive sectors.

You’re welcome for the Economy 101 lesson,

Crazy how we need to work more with all the improvements in efficiency we’ve had the the last 50 decades, and with the constant talk about how AI going to make everyone unemployed.

There was a short sweetspot in history for Boomers to get early pensions, reasonable holidays and working hours.

Guess the elite cannot come up with any other system than working is too death, no matter how rich or society gets.

  12. Friendly reminder that Germans are statistically working more than ever before already. Merz and his party are simply lying when he’s saying the problem is lack of working hours. The CDU is corrupt to the bone and some of them should be in prison for a long time. They are actively destroying democracy.

  13. Fierce_Pirate_Bunny on

Since it’s always a good idea to do the opposite of what he is saying I will work part time or even FIRE soon 😋

  14. OsgrobioPrubeta on

Merz is a rougher version of Merkel, the objectives are the same although the speech is more honest, or rougher if you want. Germans are also now experiencing the type of leaders that the Nordics imposed on southern countries during debt crisis, this dude reminds me former Portuguese Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho.

    It’s always “lazy populace” fault, always… /s

One day they will say that the last German chancellor, before the AfD’s victory, had no chance of understanding how to prevent the imminent disaster, just as the German people had no chance of knowing who they should have voted for to avoid the disaster

Germans have to work more and receive fewer benefits so that money can be sent to Israel and Ukraine. How are Israelis supposed to have a comfortable lifestyle and pay for their unending occupation, genocide, and wars if US and EU workers don’t fork over their money to them?

  17. Kagemand on

No wonder people don’t choose to work when wages are low and they are being taxed to death.

The returns to labor – which determines wages – are low because capital and energy are also taxed to hell, leading to deindustrialization, in particular because of the forced green transition no one else in the world gives a shit about.

Feel free to shoot the messenger, won’t stop factories from closing though.

This basically one week after Macron calls on the French to have kids. Is this what government is like these days?

I am never tiring of pleading to stop spreading Axel Springer articles, they are a reactionary populist media outlet that have helped the CDU and AfD on all fronts.

  20. RuudVanBommel on

I’m grateful for Merz and his calls to work more.

Ever since Fotzenfritz took charge and called for people having to work more, I’ve stopped having any remorse to start taking sick leave.

From zero sick days in 25 years to 20 sick days last year. When a millionaire politician cries about imagined productivity problems, I’m more than happy to provide him with real ones. Would never have done so if we would have a respectable chancellor, but I have stopped giving a shit since Merz doesn’t give a shit about non-pensioners and non-millionaires either.

  23. Normal-Stick6437 on

Politicians need to realise that people will not abide one-sided degradation of life and living standards. “Arbeit Deutsche scum” for the workers and “Monaco for the top 1%” philosophy turns out, oh my God, is not popular amongst the people that produce and make all useful things….

  24. watch-nerd on

“Germans don’t work enough hours and take too many sick days, hampering economic growth, Merz has argued in recent weeks.”

I thought Europe was optimizing for quality of life, anyway, not economic growth?

The German state takes around 50% of the median income in taxes, social security contributions and so on. It has not managed to tax days off work yet.

Based on the government policies, people are making the rational choice to take more time off.
