**A power cable connecting Poland and Sweden under the Baltic Sea has unexpectedly stopped working, officials have said.**

Issues with the SwePol link, a 250 kilometer-long cable installed in 2000, were first reported on Wednesday, with market data showing energy flows plummeting to zero just before 8 p.m. that evening. 

At this stage, there is no suggestion that the failure was caused intentionally, Polish grid operator PSE said. 

“The Polish power system is working stably and all safety criteria are met,” it added. Repair works are underway, with the link expected to be restored at midnight on Friday. 

Around 240 kilometers of the SwePol line runs under the Baltic. A direct current (HVDC) cable, it is capable of carrying up to 600 MW of power between the two countries, with terminals near Słupsk in north-central Poland and on Sweden’s Stärnö peninsula. 

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine just under four years ago, the Baltic Sea region has become a hotbed of so-called hybrid warfare, much of it targeting undersea infrastructure. 

A key power line and multiple telecom cables between Finland and Estonia were damaged in late 2024 by a tanker loaded with Russian oil, [which dragged its anchor across the seabed](https://tvpworld.com/88526363/suspects-in-baltic-sea-cable-breaches-plead-not-guilty-to-sabotage). 

Prosecutors say it was done deliberately, although the ship’s crew denied this, claiming it was a result of technical faults. A few weeks later, NATO launched a new surveillance and deterrence mission, [Baltic Sentry](https://tvpworld.com/88497447/nato-warships-arrive-in-latvia-to-protect-critical-underwater-infrastructure), designed to protect key infrastructure. 

Earlier in the conflict, the controversial Nord Stream gas pipeline – which linked Germany and Russia – was partially destroyed in explosions. A Ukrainian suspect, named Serhii K., was extradited from Italy to Germany late last year and is expected to stand trial over the incident. 

However, [a court in Poland](https://tvpworld.com/89520039/polish-court-frees-nord-stream-sabotage-suspect-after-blocking-extradition-to-germany) ruled last October against handing over another Ukrainian suspect wanted by Germany in connection with the explosions and ordered his immediate release from detention.
