Anyone who thinks we’ll ever see a federal Europe is delusional. Things like this are all too common and smaller countries would be powerless in a federal system

Ireland has absolutely been milking the EU setup for years. Ultra-low corporate taxes pulled in multinationals, profits get booked there, and the rest of Europe loses revenue. Now when bigger economies talk about coordinating more closely, Ireland pushes back to protect its edge … good luck with that.

Our hypocrisy and self serving attitude coming home to roost. We deserve everything we get.

The 2 speed europe is here. It may be the IS centered economy or lack of commitment to EU security that denies us an invitation to the new partnership or both maybe. Can’t think of any other reason.

There has always been a two speed Europe. We saw it in the financial collapse when Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Greece were basically looted to bail out the gambling debts of German Pension funds (aka “Bond Holders”). We were always destined to become the Aran Islands of Europe. The thing is just as the Aran Islands are better off on balance by being part of a larger Ireland we will be better off as part of a larger Europe. We just won’t be as well off as the main countries in the centre.

  6. The EU core is moving at speed given everything happening in the world, and they’re not going to be inclined to listen to us pontificating. We’ve thrown away the goodwill we had through a series of crass decisions (not investing in defence, voting against Mercosur, preaching about “militarisation” while Kyiv is getting flattened).

Politico was taken over by a German nutter trump supporter. Always anti Irish articles from it since.
