      Or: Two thirds of school meals are providing children with a nutritious FREE hot meal in the middle of the day.

      Why not focus on bringing the minority of bad suppliers up to standard? My kid is very happy with his lunches and they seem healthy to me. Keep in mind this could be the only hot meal some children eat all day.

      I think they need to focus more on the positives and the fact so many kids are getting hot meals when they weren’t before. They can address the minority of unhealthy foods and suppliers without disparaging what has been a great programme

      To be clear, the Minister says they found general compliance with the standards and that “the overall theme, the overall report, is in the right direction”.

      But obviously it’s their job to improve the areas it’s falling short, not to pat themselves on the back for the areas it isn’t. So I don’t really get the “they should focus on the positive” comments.

      My son doesn’t eat his school meals anymore, we send him to school with a packed lunch and dump his school lunch.

      Why is the tender for these lucrative contracts not forcing companies to have a certain nutritional standard? Or are companies breaching the tender?

      I’m amazed at the pissing and moaning over this scheme.

      First from the school management (literally their only job is school admin) complaining that they don’t have the place an order, then the Land Rover Leinster Rugby mummies and daddies complaining about the food.

      The whole point of the scheme was so that working class kids could get hot meals, which very often they were missing at home due to poverty and a lack of parenting. Sustenance and warmth in their bellies. They weren’t meant for Blaithnaid and Fiachra to turn their noses up at when they’ve been raised on quinoa and chia.

      There’s a system of inspection, in place, for educational standards. It isn’t perfect but it holds standards to account. Why can we not have the equivalent for inspection of meals as served up to pupils. Reported publicly as is the case for School inspections.

      I’ll never understand the whinging about this scheme. All kids in my kids school get a hot meal every day. Sure, sometimes there could be a healthier lunch but kids being fed is the main thing.

      We should cancel the scheme and let kids go hungry, and possibly not get fed at home!!!!

      I remember some of the abominations I’d bring as school lunch, even worse smashed on top of my books at the bottom of my bag.

      Suppliers should be made supply decent meals, but annoying parents should be told to shut up, and send their kids to school with their own food
