“welcoming”
Does DW think we are complete idiots?
Are we really expected to believe that 10% of the world outside of Europe visited Europe in a year?
That’s like everyone on North and South America plus Oceana and Japan and Korea went to visit Europe last year.
What they really mean is combined European countries had 800 million tourists mostly from EACH OTHER.
But in large countries like Australia, USA or Canada it’s common to visit other states within your country but that equals “zero tourists”.. we don’t say we had hundreds of millions of tourists because we drove a few hours to another place… But in Europe they qualify as international tourists.
I think the whole Europe is over touristed thing is over blown and the numbers are exaggerated because Europe is made up of dozens of tiny countries.
It’s like Netherlands having massive exports of bananas.. doesn’t really mean they grow lots of bananas.
Catch 22: local businesses thrive, while locals get priced out of the real estate market.
See Lisbon, Valencia, etc.
Europeans love to travel, but they hate tourists;
they spend more money than ever on travels, but when someone’s pointing out that this money goes into the local economy, this claim will be loudly rejected and scoffed upon;
they believe that it’s important for different cultures to meet each other, but they also don’t want people coming to where they live.
The entire discourse about tourism is fucked, because tourism (like everything else) creates both losers and winners, but online discourse is completely dominated by people who think and loudly proclaim that they are on the loser side.
Edit: 71% of all tourists are domestic tourists. [https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/w/ddn-20251010-3](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/w/ddn-20251010-3)
>Europe remained the world’s most popular destination region, welcoming about 793 million international visitors.
It doesn’t really say if “international” includes intra-EU tourists. Because the difference between a “national” and “international” tourist is often just 100km.
Pretty easy to stop overtourism. Ban airbnb and regulate short term rentals. Overtourism did not happen by accident, European businesses welcomed it with open arms.
They want both to have a cake and to eat it. It’s a sole fault of local governments. Make Air BnB and small shops selling Chinese trinkets forbidden and it will solve itself.
Tourism is the easiest fix to feeling you lead an interesting life
