>Tomasz Bruch was caught on camera dropping meat at the gates of Guru Nanak Gurdwara, in Victoria Street, before casually walking away from the scene of his crime.
>The 42-year-old – who is currently in the UK illegally – left members of the Sikh community ‘upset’ and in ‘fear’ over his hate crime on December 22 last year.
>Prosecutor Kathleen Price today (Friday, February 20) told Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court: “This is a deliberate racist crime.”
>Dalwinder Kang, a member of the congregation, said in a statement read to the court: “This gurdwara is a strictly meat-free place and any presence of meat, either on the grounds or inside the temple, is strictly forbidden.
>”The body language seen on the CCTV makes me believe that he placed it purposefully.”
>Mr Kang continued: “It made me wonder if he had mistaken us for Muslims and was actually attempting to target the Islamic faith, rather than Sikhism.
>”Nevertheless, I believe he targeted our gurdwara, our community and our religion based on a prejudice.
>The court heard how Tomasz – who was assisted in court by a Polish interpreter – has been on remand in custody since January 16.
>Ms Yasmin, defending, said the offence was ‘out of character’ for Bruch.
>Sentencing, District Judge Michael Wheeler said Bruch ‘clearly targeted a religious group’ and caused them ‘distress or alarm’.
>He said: “In my view, religious aggravation was the predominant motivation for the offence – there can be no other explanation.
>Bruch, of Harvills Hawthorn, West Bromwich, admitted racially or religiously aggravated intentional harassment or alarm or distress.
>He was handed an eight-month sentence, suspended for two years, with a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement and 150 hours unpaid work.
>District Judge Wheeler added: “I make it perfectly clear to you in sentencing you that had you not spent the last five weeks in prison, the sentence that I had passed on you would have been a sentence of immediate custody and not a suspended sentence.
>”I do not expect to see you in court for breaching the order or offending again.”
>The sentence means that Bruch will now be released from custody at HMP Hewell.
>No mention was made in court of whether he will be deported.
Is there a reason he wasn’t just picked up outside court by immigration and immediately deported?
It’s crap like this effectively turns people to Reform and Restore.
I feel like if you’re here illegally you should be deported regardless of whether you’ve committed a crime or not
“avoids jail” … due to spending five weeks in jail.
Funny definition of “avoid” being used there.
The standard rage-bait term is “spared” jail, which might be a little better in the context, but still slightly misleading.
Is he a fucking Predator with optical camo?
