I am truly shocked. Weren’t they supposed to be temporary? Who oversaw that?

  2. ShazCeallach on

Is that why they increased the tolls? Because if so, that is absurd. People aren’t driving on the M50 for fun.

  3. IncredibleBackflip on

Crazy idea but why don’t we maybe build some train lines?

  4. A_grand_cup_of_tea on

Good, good. So the tolls will be reduced now, right?

  5. Niasssssseeeeeee on

    Was that the intended purpose?

I thought it was to gouge more money from the public?

  6. Diligent-Ad4777 on

Shockingly people still need to go places. More at 11.

Raising tolls won’t fix congestion if the real issue is that everything is concentrated in Dublin and most people don’t have viable public transport options.

Think about the profits to the foreign company operating it, however.

Roads pricing only works if you provide a viable alternative. And you price the toll appropriately.

I was of the understanding that the tolls increase in line with inflation, nothing to do with any attempts to stem congestion?

Time to up the use of the stick so instead of improving alternatives

  12. Ways to reduce traffic on the roads:

    ~~* Encourage remote working~~

    ~~* Build train lines~~

    * Make road users pay more?

  13. Call-of-the-lost-one on

Well no shit. Nothing has been done to reduce the need to drive

Thought it was Waterford Whispers. People will believe anything

Obviously this does. Nothing for traffic. There is a significant number of people, mostly those who can afford to buy or rent in leafy suburbs of dublin who can walk to a luas or dart who think we all fill our cars up and crawl bumper to bumper up and down the m50 for the craic.

They can increase diesel to 10 euro a liter and up tolls to 20 euro a pass, id only have 2 options, become unemployed or pay it.

  16. There was never any claim that the increase would reduce use of the motorway, the annual charges are inflationary. Sounds like a headline written by a freight lobby group to try to reduce the toll charges.

  17. I have to go to 3 tolls for work or else my journey could be 2 hours long, I’m not doing that on purpose you idiots.

  18. qwerty_1965 on

Does anyone know if a tram was considered for the M50 when the lane upgrade was planned? It always felt like a missed opportunity to increase load significantly.

  19. NotXenos on

Well you’d need an ALTERNATE ROUTE to avoid the toll right?!

  20. LeoDGrey on

So what now? Do we protest the slight increase? Send emails? I’m sick of seeing all of this political bullshit and we just move on with it. How do we go about tackling the everyday increasing costs we are seeing in all aspects of our lives?

  21. SouthSource1936 on

Ah look they will reduce the price and refund those affected. Sorry for any inconvenience

  22. Babyindablender on

Listening to newstalk and some FFG c*nt was on saying we need to increase them more or make it a distance based approach, Aontu came on and then said the only solution is better public transport.

Seriously, are FFG this stupid that they’ll let the right side hammer them in basic debates with in touch common sense?

  23. 29September2024 on

Increasing tolls on someting critical with no better alternative is not a an effort to reduce congestion but to exploit the road users.

If they truely wanted to reduce congestion, theu would have improved infrastructure or public transport system.

  24. Hour_Mastodon_9404 on

Surprise as person still has to show up to work regardless of cost of toll.

  25. General_Z0 on

I think it’s been shown time and time again that the Irish driver is not as sensitive to price increases as people think.

And it’s pretty obvious that you’re not going to get people out of their cars unless an alternative exists. If you live in Tallaght but work in Swords, I’m sorry but there’s only one way you’re getting to work.
