No surprise. It was the exact same age group that voted overwhelmingly for Brexit.

One interesting thing is that UK politics is, in many ways, more Eastern European than Western European.

In Eastern Europe, the gender divide in politics is almost zero and the divide is stark across age groups, with the young generation being the most liberal and pro-EU. This seems to be the case in the UK as well, but not really in the rest of Western Europe, where in countries such as Germany, many young men are voting for the anti-European far right.

  3. That’s some serious support among the <50 group.

I’d love to see some polling about how they envision their role in the EU and what they want the EU to be.

There’s a huge difference between reluctantly rejoining because of economic reasons vs actually embracing the political Europe.

  4. heapOfWallStreet on

Over 65 are also the main supporters of MAGA and fascism.

  5. SweetAlyssumm on

So no problem. Just have another election and get out the sub-boomer vote. It would have been interesting to see the proportion of the total population each group is.

  6. Great, but Reform UK is leading the polls, right? 🤔 With Nigel Farage in charge, right?

  7. Single_Classroom_448 on

Sad thing is it will not be enough for a long ish time, we’re talking until those 50-64 are in the 65+ and assuming younger generations keep being pro eu.

I just wish one government would say fuck it and embrace the eu

I would not grant voting rights over 70. 16 to 70, that’s all folks, and you make a test at the booth, 5 questions on politics, your vote being weighted by the results.

  9. Interesting to see that Wales is the highest percentage that don’t want to rejoin the EU.

  10. BLightyear67 on

How can anyone in the UK say they would vote to Rejoin without knowing the terms.

  11. Efficient_Resist_287 on

These folks are reminiscing of an England which no longer exists…the quicker England recognizes this Brexit vote was a huge own goal, the better for its geopolitical and economic status.

  12. QuevedoDeMalVino on

Problems that time will solve without any effort by anyone.

  13. Mallardz- on

With every passing year the rejoin camp grows and the leave camp shrinks. It’s only a matter of time. Could be 5, 10, 20 years but the UK will be asking to rejoin in my lifetime… So long as I keep looking both ways before crossing the street.

  14. edparadox on

    It depends on the poll.

When it’s “let’s rejoin as we were before”, sure, only boomers are problematic.

When it’s “let’s apply to be part of the EU like any other country”, it is not that clear.

  15. ProbablyBsPlzIgnore on

Yeah until the next crisis that can be conveniently blamed on Europe. The UK can’t keep bouncing in and out of the EU, it would break both sides.

Leaving was an unforced own-goal, but talking about rejoining now would just mean rekindling the conflict. Nigel Farage looks likely to dominate UK politics for the intermediate future, so let’s shelve this idea for the next decade or so.

  16. OldManAtterz on

Great, so theres a natural evolutionary process that just need to take its cause

  17. alba_Phenom on

How long are we going to allow these old dumb codgers to mess things up for people still interested in a full and fruitful life?
Put an age restriction on the next referendum. The most ardent supporter of Brexit in my office was in his 70s and his rational was “things were much better before we joined the EU” rose tinted glasses nonsense.

  18. The_Berzerker2 on

Making this poll seven French flags is diabolical work

  19. Due_Professional_894 on

Well they are the wisest. They’ve led our country for a few decades now and everything is good. Isn’t it?

  20. Artistic-Cream6921 on

Fucking old cunts fucking it up for the rest of us.

  21. Savage-September on

Give 16 year old the vote. It will put and end this constant grey vote dominance.

  22. Other_Class1906 on

The question is whether the EU should welcome someone who is going to vote for Reform UK on the next occasion. Why would we welcome someone who is going to willingly be the long arm of the alt and ultra right and who will block all regulations on anti-corruption or any regulation really?

I think we need to be cleverer than that and first get our voting system and transparency issues in order.

  23. ShitassAintOverYet on

No fucking shit, that generation doesn’t understand how it’s like to work in the shithole they’ve created. Those who vote no probably boast about voting for Thatcher.

  24. burnermcburnerstein on

65+ shouldn’t be allowed to dictate a future they won’t experience.

  25. Beyllionaire on

Over 65s entire life’s purpose is to piss off the rest of the society.

  26. Pentax25 on

Wish they’d leave and make their own damn country. Won’t be along for long anyway, why’d they have to ruin it for the rest of us?

  27. AssumptionCandid6413 on

Im 72 I’d rejoin tomorrow so thats very sweeping and bollocks

  28. There are probably more 25-49 year olds than 65+ so why is this an issue. Certainly more 18-64 year olds which would be more than enough to change any imbalance.

    This is just clickbait.

  29. nt-gud-at-werds on

The selfish fucks who received the most benefit from a unified Europe and the EU. Pulled up the ladder so no one else can enjoy the benefits. The fucking worst generation ever.

  30. Cynical_Doggie on

Now what if the price to pay for the UK is to give up their Pound Sterling and adopt the Euro.

All trade deals are returned from before but no more gbp.

  31. Cabbage_Vendor on

This graph gives a very warped view. Why is the first age bracket only 8 years, the second 24 years, the third 14 years and the last one maxes out to like 40-45 years? It’s not like these are the same group sizes.

  32. AliceKite on

As much as I am personally happy that so many people want to rejoin, do Europeans actually want the UK back? Genuine question. I get the feeling that many in Europe see the British Isles as European but they don’t think that the political entity of the UK is European. There is something about civic attitude in the UK that I don’t think sits right with many in Europe. Something that goes beyond one policy like Euro skepticism and something that sits deeper behind how people view government and governance.

If you do want the UK to join is it just nukes and banking, is it purely expansionist and progressive or is it a real belief that the UK (specifically the political entity) belongs in Europe.

  33. Hierotochan on

Lots of those 65+ votes being mailed in from Spanish beaches.

  34. pgsimon77 on

It would seem we have a similar problem here in the United States 😜

  35. sparkymark75 on

Maybe you should get more votes when you’re younger and then you lose votes as you get older 🤷‍♂️

    e.g. 10 votes at 18, 1 at 70

  36. Killerninjaz13Two on

Going back in would be the worst idea ever

We have absolutely no leverage for negotiations and starmer will do what he does best and gargle whatever brussles gives him

Ontop that we’ll be forced to take the Euro which will devalue our economy even more

  37. djangovsjango on

If you dont pay tax via wages your vote should be worth half a taxpayer
