In Dutch culture it is absolutely normal to openly talk about the problems and real state of things. Some people find it rude or even offensive.

Daddy will be happy. and people from European countries will be butthurt but the truth hurts.

If this is the underlying (yet unstated) truth, the only truth, it must be supposed that the goverments (at least) of the allied countries other than the USA (including The Netherlands, of which Rutte was PM) were aware of if, which goes against those countries’ own best interests. That’s treason. If those governments were not aware, they must have been stupid (does this include Rutte too?). Otherwise what he says cannot be true or cannot be the whole truth. If it isn’t the whole truth, why is Rutte presenting it as such? What is his agenda? Making his claim true?

    What a despicable guy.

    Edit to correct some typos.

That’s always been NATO’s intended purpose, which Rutte is just being honest about.

Perhaps Trump, on his saner days, realises this and that might be why he hasn’t left the organisation but has instead used the threat of departure to bend the organisation to his will.

Rutte openly endorses America’s illegal wars.

European democracies should leave NATO and form our own defensive alliance separate from the US, an increasingly aggressive rogue state.

For most of recent history there has been no difference between NATO and europe.

So it would be like saying – Europe is a platform for projecting American power.

Agree that Rutte has a challenging job. However, the over the top praising and calling Trump ‘daddy’ seems too easy and may prove counter productive.
As it’s reinforces Trump’s feeling he’s untouchable and can do as he pleases.

We don’t know what Rutte’s message and tone of voice is to Trump behind closed doors.
But a little less excessive flattering would be good.

Rutte is top in this game … i’m not sure why all the fuss. (Not from Holland)

NATO be like a platform for US military, they certainly behave as such, with some exceptions as of late.

Although, he could be clear about the USA aggression war against Iran, and not do a Putler move ‘special military operation’ <-> military campaign my ass.

Meh. All the pro-Russian media has been blasting this since yesterday. What Rutte said was slightly more nuanced that NATO is [“also”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELNl5s42KjM&t=409s) such a platform, so he put it as a deal or win-win. This was in an interview with Newsmax, which is a very pro-Trump/America-first platform.

The additional context there is that the interviewer had been questioning/attacking him for NATO/Europe not supporting the war with Iran more than it does. Rutte is trying to preempt talk of “freedom fries” etc., at a time when Europe (incl. Ukraine) is still reliant on US weapons quite a bit. Some of that may be a little late, as Trump already attacked Starmer as “no Winston Churchill”.

It is. The nukes stationed in Europe aren’t to defend Europe. They’re to defend the US, it’s just more convenient for them if they’re close to Russia.

All the NATO bases are just to support the American aggressions throughout the world. We need to get out ASAP.

Simply don’t understand why europeans have become so slavish towards America

  11. Ruddi_Herring on

It is. Which is why Europe needs its own Pan-European defence and security organisation so Europe can protect itself without needing the Americans. Ideally this organisation will serve as a prelude to a European army.

Once again, he’s not wrong. He isn’t saying what it should be, he’s saying what it is in practice today.

  13. SmugCapybara on

This is what NATO has been in the past. That much is indisputable.

The question is, just because that is what it was in the past, does that mean it has to stay that way?

  14. Stock-Side-6767 on

Rutte is not wrong in that statement, but VVD sucks up to the US constantly, and he headed that party for a long time.

  15. ZaireekaFuzz on

Europe needs to disentangle from the USA as soon as possible.

  16. pacino8591 on

Rutte is as slippery as an eel, like nailing jelly to a wall. The Dutch know he some times remembers things differently. Watch out for him.

  17. ProfessorNoPuede on

No shit, Sherlock. This is why the current Republican administration is a dream come true for China and Russia. America shooting itself in the foot.

    Let’s hope sanity will prevail.
