I meant it at the time but reserve the right to flip flop and change position later

so we’ll be standing “militarily” with Iran, illegally attacked by Israel-USA?

  3. donmarrua on

basically chipping away at the status quo that Ireland is militarily neutral… normalising the rhetoric..

  4. Nearby_Potato4001 on

Well, we are sending non lethal military equipment to Ukraine, so yeah.

  5. InfectedAztec on

Sinn Fein are Ireland’s pro russia party.

You can just look at their MEP records abstaining from votes a month ago on Ukrainian funding or condemning the Iranian government.

No one agrees what our “neutrality” means.

MM’s position is consistent that it simply means we’re “not in NATO (or anything like that)”. (Edit: consistent in recent years only; he said the Triple Lock was at the “core” of our neutrality in 2013).

That’s not what “neutrality” means to a lot of people, but there’s never actually been an amendment/law/act that makes us “neutral”.

It’s always just been a nebulous description of how Ireland works on the world stage.

She’s right, let NATO clean up its own mess.

    We should have no involvement.

  8. Haven’t we military being supporting the Lebanon for years?

We’ve also worked with the military in Kosovo and Mali.

Get him. “Some people get shocked [you overly emotional, neurotic, ill informed & ignorant little individual] but I don’t [see how calm and level headed I am gaslighting your valid and insightful, legitmate concern, you poor shocked woman]” Get. Him. And make them define it Explicitly.

  10. We have never been “neutral” about anything, and rightly so. Not part of any military alliances, yes, but neutral, no. I’m with MM on this.

His body language is atrocious. Folded under a miligram of pressure.

  12. Art_Questioner on

I wonder, how long those neutrality pledges would stand if we got attacked?

  13. Nefilim777 on

US Military planes refuel in Shannon. We’re not remotely neutral.

  14. When you aren’t strong enough to defend yourself you’re not neutral. Same way you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless. We’ve a mentality in Ireland that if the bombs fall they won’t fall on us because we’ve no real threats to anyone here. I’ve a feeling those data centers and the ports and airports might become targets anyway though when they’re being used for cyber warfare and to refuel American war planes. Switzerland is neutral. Irelands is docile.

So how much extra tax are you willing to pay for military equipment? Maybe your more the type to cut social benefits, school, housing etc. war is expensive.

You are just an economic zone of a financial empire fellas, and subservient to it. If they say jump you jump, if they say go to war you’ll go to war. Is that simple!

Why dont the opposition get that our policy allows us to be flexible.

Shes playing a game of semantics and needs to move on.

The EU is arming up, it’s strategically better not to have a resource like Ireland being neutral, we’ll likely see more and more of these language changes over the next few years.

Don’t worry though, RTE will find a way to blame Donald Trump so we can all feel good about it 🙂

  20. OldBorktonian on

Triple lock includes acting on a UN mandate or whatever it’s called. No UN decision to send peacekeeping troops can be made in the Ukraine because Russia will veto. Pretty simple.

  21. the_sneaky_one123 on

This government is determined to end Irish neutrality and are making steps towards it every day. I can see two top reasons.

    1) To cosy up to Europe and NATO, securing good jobs for themselves later in life

    2) To funnel Irish tax money into defence contracts. Massive lucrative for a lot of people and certainly some brown envelopes have been exchanged.

This is NOT in the interests of Irish people and neutrality is still supported by most Irish people. We need to stop being so fucking lazy and complacent and actually start calling out the government on this bullshit.

He has family members who fought in the british army, what more do you need to know.

Look lads. The world is going to shite. We can’t sit on a fence when our mates are being shat on and then expect to have an equal and fair say around the economic table. Time to realise that things are changing and we may not necessarily like it.

  24. thetearinreality on

People in thus country need to grow up and realise in these days we cannot afford to be ‘neutral’.

  25. Galacticmetrics on

While Ireland upholds military neutrality and lacks full independent defense capacity, its strategic location amid NATO members (notably the UK) ensures that aggression against it would endanger allied interests, likely drawing a protective response.

  26. The government saying we’re militarily committed is like a toddler ‘helping’ it’s parents.

Even if we were giving aid (which isn’t the case as there is limitations on what we can give) it’d be the political equivalent of thoughts and prayers because we’re just too small to make a difference

  27. saggynaggy123 on

Just put neutrality to a referendum and end this shite once and for all.

I don’t want to join NATO but I support upgrading our defence forces.
