>“With any luck, we will never return to the States,” Ophelia said. “It truly breaks my heart because, while I hate America and everything that it stands for, we left behind everyone and everything that we’ve ever known and loved. Knowing that it’ll be a very long time, if ever, that we’re able to see the people that we love… It breaks you down.
>“But aside from all that, I mean, I don’t think that it’s going to be safe for us to return at any point soon,” Ophelia continued. “Nothing substantial is being done to combat this authoritative regime that is currently occupying the United States. So, for the sake of the safety of my wife and I, I don’t think that we’re ever going to be able to return under any circumstances.”
>The couple are now anxiously waiting the result of their international protection application to live in Ireland, and are mindful of the possibility their application may be refused.
They are asylum seekers? I get that some areas in the US are not as friendly to LGBTQ+ communities than I would like, but they should really get a visa instead of using this as an excuse for free accommodation.
So not only is Trump fucking us with oil and immigrants from countries he bombed but now with his own citizens aswell
Have there been any successful asylum applications from the states yet? Other than extreme edge cases where kids are involved?
Cause this seems like a bit of a piss take
What a joke this country is. Complete fucking joke.
I dont know much about it, but surely it isnt that difficult to move here as a US citizen?
Direct provision sounds unpleasant to say the least
Should just be an automatic rejection on day 1 tbh
They clearly just want to live in Ireland, otherwise they would’ve gone to Canada for “safety” (I say this as a Canadian)
Sorry now but this is absurd
‘Left with no option but to flee their homeland due to an increasingly hostile environment’ – what a complete farce. There is no legitimate fear of persecution were they to remain in the US. What exactly do they claim would have happened to them had they remained in the US? It’s not illegal in the US to be trans.
They need to be deported ASAP because it makes a complete mockery of the entire concept of asylum, as if it wasnt already being abused badly enough. And the government cannot be seen to be a soft touch or it will become a destination of choice for asylum seekers.
There actually needs to be some sort of deterrant to stop such obiously frivolous and illegitimate claims. Again, not liking the politics of a current government is not a reason for asylum. There should be a zero tolerance approach to chancers like these. Seeking asylum from the US is completely ridiculous.
That’s 70k a year to keep them in the state.
That’s all the income tax paid by 14 typical Irish workers.
😂😂😂
Just be sent straight back, pure hyperbole. Wasting resources, what’s wrong with California, Oregon, New England?
Deport those chancers
Kansas passed a law a couple of weeks ago to invalidate the drivers licenses of trans people in the state. It’s probably a bit far-fetched, but some are worried that the federal government might do the same with their passports.
The government should put a policy in that if you fail in obtaining asylum as this couple will you are liable for the cost of processing, accomodation, and have to return all money paid to you from the social system. Add 10k on top of that as a felony stupid charge.
Then do everything in their power to enforce it.
There were at least 2 options on their own continent. Certainly liberal cities would be an obvious choice too. I don’t think this meets the bar for asylum
I don’t think this is a legit asylum case for various reasons but those of ye losing the mind legitimately need to calm the fuck down.
This feels like a headline scientifically created to rustle jimmys.
Lads was here or on ask ireland were we had a very similar story asking for advice on this ?
Insane. There are a gazillion places in the US that are more trans affirming than all of Ireland and certainly more than rural Ireland where they’ve moved to.
99% chance of deportation order but should have been automatic, not an at risk group fleeing from an unsafe place. And we’ll have to wait and see if they actually leave. Outrageous for there to even be a donation campaign.
Sorry but zero tax payers money should be going to ‘refugees’ from the US
To be fair lads, if I was American I’d also seek asylum in another country.
Just when you think our asylum system couldn’t be made even more of a mockery along comes this case.
Actually taking already highly scarce resources away from those genuinely fleeing war and persecution.
If they have jobs lined up, let em stay.
Send them back and have them apply for a visa.
We should put the US on the safe country of origin list so applications are processed quickly. I know there are not as many applicants abusing the system from the US as from other countries but the fact these chancers have been put up by the State since May 2025 is enough of a reason.
Trans couple from USA looking for asylum in Ireland
Did AI write this article to target outrage?
Happy that we are a decent country where people feel safe
Should be sent back on the next available flight
Direct Provision, my god. I know parts of the US are bad but seeking asylum? Really?
I hope theyre handed a bill when theyre absolutely BS asylum claim is rejected
Are we the joke, or are they?

Has to be a fabricated piss take surely ?
Can’t imagine their asylum claim will be accepted.
