Local chippie where I live in Essex has medium cod for 9.50

I honestly can’t tell the difference between it and cod so I’d be fine with having it on the menu.

They have been talking about us eating pollock instead of cod for decades.

I don’t mind it and have actually deliberately brought it myself before to cook instead of cod. Most fish fingers are no longer cod or haddock due to price.

Didn’t a lot of chip shops already switch to Pollock years ago due to concerns about the overfishing of Cod?

Price has gone through the roof. Ours went from a bit steep 10.50 to 13 quid this year. That’s insane.

Ive been going with whitebait as my preference for a while now. Small individual perfectly battered and crisp mouthfuls of tender fishflesh.

    Pollock is sound.

The only white fish i’m not a fan of and won’t willingly eat is basa. Taste and texture just isn’t appealing.

Who knew overfishing was bad and going to catch-up with us? The season are being irreversibly destroyed by mega-trawlers to meet consumer demand, affecting the species targeted and the thousands caught as by-catch. People were up in arms when a whale died on Blue Planet 2 but care far less about the ocean when a fish they eat is affected.

Do it don’t know why everyone is obsessed with cod

  10. Pollock is good! Just wait until they start asking you to eat Basa. Then you will miss Pollock.

As well as the rise in the price of Cod, the rise in energy costs, minimum wage and employers NI contribution have made running such a business more difficult.

Cod n chips is cheaper in the pub next to the chippie, with the app sometimes get money off too. Last time I braved the chip chop it was £16.50 for fish n chips with a small curry sauce, at that price I’d rather pay £3 more and go to the Indian and get a curry that I’ll have to finish off the next day so can get two meals out of it.

Pollock is really nice, better than cod tbh. I’d like to see dogfish increase in popularity, they hit our beaches in huge numbers every single tide, stupidly easy to catch, no bones and they taste great.

Chippies have gone from the cheapest takeaway to the most expensive.

My chippie lets you upgrade to cod for an extra charge.
Not sure why all chippies don’t do the same

Like in Dads Army, Capt Mainwaring can only afford a “Snook fish cake” from the Victory cafe.😂

Pollocks not much different to other fish I’ve caught and eaten from haddock cod plaice pout, they just have different flakiness and density as long as they’re freshly caught (no I don’t mean flash frozen) bass and mackerel are about as polar opposite it gets but you don’t find either in a fish n chip shop

Whatever happened to coley? It was common about 20 years ago but I haven’t seen it frozen in years – was really good.

  19. JoeyJoJoeJr_Shabadoo on

I’ve said for ages, if chippies just started putting “white fish” on their menu and that white fish was whatever is currently seasonal and abundant, people would adjust. Especially if it’s a price saver.

Honestly i always try to get something other than cod as we’ve been obliterating fish stocks for a while now. Eventually theres just not going to be any.

  21. ComprehensiveAd8815 on

I like pollock, if you are told what it is and not lied to and told it’s cod then it’s fine.

Fish supper is now a treat meal, regular cod n chips cost around £16 near me and is more than enough for one, a large cod and chips for £19 could easily feed two.

Some People have lost grip with reality and straying in to the abolish minimum wage gang.

  22. Skinnybet on

Pollock is lovely imo. I can’t see the difference between it and most other white fish.

  23. Important_Ruin on

Pollock is tasty, along with Haddock. Just tell me what fish I’m eating not passing pollock off as Cod or making it clear that the Fish and Chips on menu is not actually Cod but another fish.

  24. dannydrama on

Lots of people in here are saying they can’t tell the difference anyway… if you can’t tell what you’re eating then it must be fucking shit. 😂

  25. Worried-Penalty8744 on

My cheap local has been “fish” for at least decades now. They’ve definitely served pollock/whiting/coley in the past and I assume it won’t be long before they start serving nasty nasty basa

The good one still serves haddock

  26. HussingtonHat on

Is it so weird to have like fish seasons or so.ething? Like this next 6 months is cod and we’ll switch to something else after that to let numbers pop back up?

  27. Wise_Ad_1856 on

Pollock is served and has been served as part of the fish and chip experience for a long time and only some just becoming aware of this. COD prices going up but customers moans at price, so replace the white fish with another white fish to keep prices down…. Customers na we want cod though pollock tastes bad blah blah blah… I fcking hate people 🙁
