    >Public figure

    >A key figure in Turkish public discourse, Ortaylı has appeared frequently on television programs, radio shows, and in the press, where he discusses historical issues, current events, and Turkey’s place in the modern world. His ability to make history relevant to contemporary discussions has made him a central figure in the intellectual life of Turkey. However, his career has not been without controversy, several of Ortaylı’s political positions have been criticized, notably his denial of the [Armenian Genocide](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armenian_Genocide).[^([12])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C4%B0lber_Ortayl%C4%B1#cite_note-12)

Why is denying the Armenian Genocide such a big deal for Turks?

I’m Dutch my ancestors did truly horrible things to…well to anyone in the world, from slavery to subjegation to outright genocide, some of those fucked up things were as recent as the whole Sbrenica shitshow.

I think the sole redeeming factor in our shitty history is that we try to learn from it. Its taught in our schools and Sbrenica led to a complete restructuring of our military doctrines

The thing we don’t do is deny it, why is this so hard to do for the Turks?
