I thought that whole thing was dying down? Can’t you just fine them for littering?

The council also added that their teams removing the flags had been subject to abuse and threatening behaviour, which Leffman described as “totally unacceptable.”
Of course they were.

Good. It’s about time they started taking them down too. They look absolutely terrible. Where I live, half of them have partially come away from the lampposts so they are just hanging on by one corner like a handkerchief in the wind, the rest are just wrapped around the post. They look cheap and tatty. I feel like councils are afraid to take them down out of fear of being labelled ‘woke’ by the Flag Shaggers though. A council worker was even attacked and pushed off a ladder. People surely must know how bad they look? And the people putting them up play no part in making their communities places to be proud of either.

It just looks tatty having a load of moldy flags hanging around. It’s fine when they’re in someone garden and decently maintained but the lamp post stuff just makes the area look deprived and grotty.

Good. A load of them round Oxford are just rags at this point. It looks a right state. Fly flags on your own flag poles and then use the time saved by no longer littering flagpoles and actually contribute some time to your community.

Most of the ones in the area I live are now battered, dirty, torn and hanging on by a thread.
Makes me feel proud everytime I see them.

These flags make it look like the country is in a constant state of mourning with them mostly all being half masted…
If people seriously want to keep this up they should lobby their councils to install proper rigging , and hopefully maintain these flags as a volunteer service if the locals want it, hopefully at no or very low cost to councils…

I think it’d be cooler to have the county flags displayed. I love visiting a friend in Hexham where loads of people have the flag of Northumberland flying. I feel like it would add more culturally and British identity wise than having really cheap England flags mouldering away on lampposts.

They are not “Oxfordshire group” by the way, it’s raise the colours group and the members involved travelled from elsewhere in the country to plant flags in Oxford. Previously they travelled from Liverpool. It was not local residents putting up flags but agitators from elsewhere. Oxford is pretty left wing city that was never involved in the riots or the flags, so outside groups of people who are obviously paid keep on travelling here. They also harassed local people hence why the police got involved.

The people putting up the flags have absolutely no idea how to handle or respect the flag.

It’s wild that the council has to deal with threats just for doing their job. This whole saga just feels like performative littering at this point.

They are pretty useful indicators of where not to buy a house if you’re looking to move.

People complain about the flags and the rise of the far right, but no one ever addresses why this is happening. In the space of a few years we have had the fastest demographic change ever in this country. People don’t recognize where they grew up and feel no one is listening to them. I don’t think it’s surprising that English people are doing what is actually a small act of peaceful resistance. If this happened in many other parts of the world you can bet it would be far worse.

I am truly of the belief that we can take flags back from the shaggers. All that needs to happen is a ‘I’m British and this is my flag’ campaign by Greens or Labour absolutely filled to the brim with everyone of every denomination, gender, colour etc. Then produce a flag with that slogan on and give them away with every purchase of absolutely anything.

People who put EU flags in their bio and run around with Palestinian flags every chance they get are all of a sudden upset by flags.
