We should be working anyways. No need to be off that long.

Nice, I am now reading it for the 47th time and for the 4rd time on this sub alone…

Things are definitely changing fast in Europe. Just a few years ago, this kind of rule would have sounded extreme, but now it’s being introduced as a precaution. Shows how much the global situation is influencing domestic policies

  4. Such a sexist and discriminatory law and that in this century to boot. You’d figure that this would be unacceptable in the EU, but I guess gender discrimination like this must be perfectly fine legally then?

Why should anyone accept conscription when half the country gets a free pass?

  6. elenorfighter on

This isn’t so new, from the time drafting was done in Germany 1961 to 2011 this law exists.

  7. Incorrect.
No approval needed, no consequences If you dont do it.

  8. It has been very interesting to me that other /r/europe redditors went great lengths and with big comments to say this piece of news is absolutely nothing to be worth the attention. One thread even got deleted by the mods yesterday.

I don’t live in Germany (i am in Spain) but this would be somewhat alarming for me if this happened here.

This is a law from 1956 that only now comes into theoretical effect again and they are looking at how to make the necessary changes so there’s no unnecessary bureaucracy. The law is to keep track of how many people they can call on in the case of an emergency…

It is a reactivation of our old, formerly paused, conscription law. It does not include women because it was written many decades ago by a bunch of guys, at a time rape in marriage was not illegal. They just reactivated the law because they don’t have the backing or majorities to change our constitution to include women. Such a majority would require the far right and despite them stroking conflict about it, they sure as shit wouldn’t support female conscription.
The registration is also not new, everyone of my male family members had to technically do it. It never mattered and no one cares. If we are at war and people get actively conscripted for it, then this law will be the last of anyone’s worries.

Lmfao, please do not act like this is being reinforced.

These rules are not to be applied unless we are in a wartime/critical defense scenario. One might argue we are in a critical defense scenario, but that is exactly it, it is to be argued which means you simply Appeal if they annoy you (in court if need be, but that wont happen, they wont even contact you).

It is not the germans people fault that the Bundeswehr and Merzstaat fails to properly implement civilian forces and/or do good marketing, I’d gladly learn some shit and help the military if it wouldn’t mean becoming reserves

Not happy about this at all, even if it is not enforced (for now) it is a step toward limiting the freedom of movement in the union, by an individual nation that might become a precendent to further weaken us in a moment when we need to band together and not focus on bullshit nationalism.

It is a very slippery slope to be honest.

My country has a strong brain drain from the northern countries, should we also introduce limitations to our young workers leaving for Germany for vague “military” reason (which would lead to further salary compression at home)? And what happrns when everyone else start thinking the same line of thoughts?

Sure the government is not enforcing it now… but they have the power to do so anytime they want…

This being restricted just to men, if it is eventually enforced might also lead to idiotic demographic considerations on top of that, which are not going to be great potentially in the long run.

But they give social benefits to ukrainian able bodied males coming to germany lmao

  14. mad_marble_madness on

The law is from the late 1950ies – no surprise it’s misogynistic.

The “approval” MUST be given if not in an actual defensive situation.
It’s there to allow an accounting of how many people are available for basic military service.
The law has been unchanged all this time, it simply was suspended for about two decades, when mandatory basic service was suspended, as well.

Problem is that it is not a “normal” law, but instead, it is in the core constitution requiring a 2/3 majority to change.
And given our current parliament, that is not happening anytime soon.

Imo, it’s better to go ahead with what we have, and what the current state of the German forces are able to cope with, now.
We absolutely need to improve our defenses, now – that cannot wait.

Establishing proper equality requires significant improvement of those parts of the military infrastructure that currently do not allow for women in them.
Absurdly, the money is there (increased military budget) – but the political will is not.
It’s what the majority of Germany voted for, very unfortunately.

IMO, we should just take a huge example from the way the Nordics (esp. Finland) are doing it.
But not with current balance of parliament, and current media landscape (e.g.: Axel Springer group).

Okay, if Merz wants to complete the suicide of his government, he would do better to hand the reins of government directly to AfD and that would be quicker.

I don’t plan on leaving for 3 months anytime soon but I just wouldn’t mention it.

  17. helena-dido on

most commenters say that this is sexist and unfair … I guess they aren’t married yet, and don’t have children. It’s hard to imagine for me such a man who would prefer his wife or daughter to fight instead of him …

  18. uberprimata on

And what will the german people do about it? Just eat it?

  19. A discussion about things that everyone has only read half of…

It has been made clear that, as long as a state of emergency or crisis is not declared – which is a mere formality – the application will not be rejected. How many men are we talking about who have been away from the country for more than three months?

    Calm down, will you?

  20. rooiraaf on

It doesn’t apply for foreigners living in Germany. Now all of a sudden, the very slow process of obtaining citizenship is a blessing in disguise.
