ciao a tutti,

Virare in anticipo!

You pass Falun on your route. The old adage say that he who hasn’t seen the copper mine at Falun, he hasn’t seen Sweden at all.

Mora for a quick stroll down town and Rättvik has a very nice beach and a lot of retro cars around – would say they are worth visiting

Falun, Mora, if you want to take a detour from the planned route, perhaps Uppsala as well before heading down the E4 down to Stockholm.

Sorry, we didn’t put anything nice there.

Jokes aside, go via Falun. They have a huge famous copper mine which you can tour and it’s very interesting and cool. Rättvik and the lake Siljan are scenic locations you should check out as well, there is a superb view coming from Falun into Rättvik.

Bit of a detour but ”helvetesfallet” is a nice canyon with an old bridge.

Sala silvergruva! (Silver mines) either just visit the area or get the guided tour down into the mines, very cool

  7. The left is more or less in the forest the whole way.

The right goes past where there actually lives (some) people, and going past Falun and Siljan (Leksand, Rättvik, Mora). Pluss the road is better.

You have the (over) 1000 year old coppermine in Falun. Zorn museum (and house) in Mora.

Don’t know how you will do this in 1 day though. I mean it will take 6 hours (wo traffic) to get there

Lappens Grill in Hedemora have very nice ”tunnbrödrulle” which is a classic swedish wrap.

Going through the mining districts south of Mora, most of the historical locations and notable places are old mines and their auxiliary buildings, as well as steelworks. Water wheel hammers, smelting huts, smithys, old industrial complexes and whatnot. Many are still active as modern steel plants. Some of the places date back to the 1400s, 1500s etcetera.

I’m not religious, but I always adore a good ol’ swedish sockenkyrka (parish church). You’ll see what I mean, I think they’re beautiful and I usually stop at my local one whenever I pass it on foot or bike just to admire the architecture and whatnot. They’re usually open to the public so you can walk inside and look.

Falu Koppargruva is always a highlight if you can get in on a tour into the mine. The open air mine is kinda cool, but you wanna go down if you’re able. Old Falun town is also kinda neat, very cutesy place to walk through. All of Falun is kind of a bitch to drive through though, so I would park in a convenient location and walking into the town.

Also take note of suffixes along the whole route. Common ones are “-hammar” which usually means there is or used to be a water wheel hammer of some sort. And you’ve got “-hyttan” and its variants referring to smelting huts. And likely a lot of “-berg”, which is of course referring to mines and mountains. You’ll probably see a lot of “malm”, referring to ore.

Most of the names along your route will likely refer to mining and steel industry in some way. That excites some people, others not so much. I love it, personally.

Edit: I forgot possibly the most important thing we have! The beautiful nature in the valleys!

  11. Falun and then the area around Siljan, could be pretty much anywhere but maybe Tällberg or something like that.

Around Falun you’ve got the Copper Mine and Carl Larsson-gården among other things.

  12. Depends on how much time you got. I could litterally give you a couple of hours of fun things to see in every town you pass.

    Sala: Silvermine
Avesta: worlds lathets dalahorse and the current record hight in pole vault (Duplantis mother was born in that town.
Stora Skedvi: Locally produced bread shop and a very good restaurant.
Säter: Säterdalen, a very nice and long ravine.
Falun: Coppermine and the local museum
Sundborn: The home of Carl Larsson.
Tällberg: Kind of a resort village with loads of good hotels and spa.
Rättvik and Mora: Loads of cultural things related to the area.

Tällberg, between Leksand and Rättvik. Probably the most Dalarna place you can visit.
Otherwise if you pass Falun, make sure you’re in daylight when you get to Rättvik. You’ll understand why when you get there. 1 minute of that sunset hour lasts me for a year.

  14. After Gagnef everything is beautiful except the “city” centers. A lot of ‘loppisar’ and really nice cafees along the way.

  15. Better_Sprinkles_978 on

Zornmuséet och Vasaloppsmålet i Mora. Långbryggan och Vidablick i Rättvik. Koppargruvan i Falun. Tjärna Ängar och Tunatutten i Borlänge? Leksand kan man med fördel köra runt.

  16. Cndymountain on

Not sure how much of a detour you’re open to but visiting central Uppsala (the church, university building, nation palaces and maybe old Uppsala) could be interesting for you.

  17. You will be passing by Lake Siljan which has many nice places to stop.
Lake Siljan is the biggest meteor impact crater in Europe.

Some nice towns would be Sala, Falun, Leksand, Rättvik, Mora,

Sala got a silver mine, Falun got a copper mine. All of the towns got an old section with nice buildings from the 1700-1800s. Of course also older churches and stuff.

In Rättvik you have the worlds longest lake pier. 627 meters. Take the falun road, its the superior scenic route. The old church in rättvik is very beautiful aswell. There is also a nice place called springkällan. In the 1800s the tried drilling for oil around siljan , and they accidentally hit a spring instead. Its a cool semi-natural fountain

Go check out the Dala horse-factories in Nusnäs close to Mora!

  20. VividEfficiency6566 on

LYKO factory outlet is the most exciting thing along that road 😉

  21. oohdanishfriend on

If you can, hit road 66 between Björbo and Ludvika or opposite in daylight. Very beautiful road that pass an in-lake peninsula.

  22. BerglindX on

Make sure to to take a detour via Torsång on the way. Maybe via Stora Skedvi. Both are between Hedemora and Falun.
