The 73 crisis was due to throttling of 7% of world oil supply, 79 crisis was 4%. This is 20%, if the Strait doesn’t open soon it’s going to be like nothing we have ever seen before. That’s why all these protests now are so premature. This hasn’t even started yet.

1970’s always comes across as grim and depressing time in Ireland, but love to see the variety in the colour of cars on the road then.

Complete opposite now, 4K video but grey, black and white cars

The Americans created a coup in Iran to get a puppet government in power to run the state so they had access to the oil. The communists started a revolution against the US backed Shah but America didn’t want them to get in power, as they would obviously lose influence over the oil. So they backed the Islamic revolution to get the Ayatollah into power after which he had the communists executed. Then America encouraged Saddam Hussein to get the Iraqi army to attack Iran which resulted in 8 years of war between the two countries with nothing gained by either side. They needed oil revenue then to rebuild their countries and were helped by agreements around oil production from OPEC. Soon after Hussein discovered Kuwait was stealing their oil and got the UN involved to verify it. Hussein asked the Americans for permission to invade Kuwait over this and they told him America didn’t care what he did so he sent his army in. Thatcher had a meeting with Bush after which Bush decided to commence the first gulf war! Iran has suffered since with numerous sanctions enforced by USA. Now we have the yanks attacking Iran to get rid of the ayatollah, almost certainly at Israel’s behest, using the excuse that Iran backs terrorism. I’m starting to think that the Americans are the assholes!

Reduce driving by 5%? How does that work? I’d go to work, stop a km from the house on the way back.

Teenager at that time, didn’t know anyone personally who owned a car ( one neighbour drove but he worked shifts so needed a car). People used to travel by bus, bike or walk.

Ah yes, and remind me again what happened in 1979 that triggered that crisis..?

Oh, the americans meddled in Iran? How interesting that they’ve learned fuck all in 46 years.

i remember it well. The music teacher in my school still had a few cans of petrol he’d kept since the Suez crisis of ’56.
