Be a good idea, might see it in 2100 when the children’s hospital is complete

  2. AffectionateSwan5129 on

Waiting for the several redditors that come to every nuclear post and shit on the idea saying it’ll never happen and won’t work.. some user called DeeVolt or something. Literally every post.

  3. Let’s be honest, cost aside, we dont have the time to explore this option. I dont even need to make metrolink level jokes, even in an ideal world this is 20 years away.

  4. Prior_Vacation_2359 on

Christ u wouldnt let them build anything. They can’t manage anything. They would be better off buying the gas plant in the birth reconditioning it take back the gas off the coast and build energy stability. After this then they should start with grants for solor.

  5. finishedatlast on

It wouldn’t be so bad if they weren’t spunking an absolute fortune on energy infrastructure that locks us into foreign gas, LNG plant in North Kerry, rather than infrastructure that builds energy independence

  6. Hopeful-Remote9725 on

Not having as much control as you can of your own energy supply also has big costs in todays world. The horse has bolted, but you’d want to do what you can as quickly as you can anyway.

  7. stevewithcats on

Just get a company who build these and ask how much . And then leave them at it.
Bulldoze through the nimbys with a government act which protects developments of national importance.

  8. throughthehills2 on

Build nuclear but not as a response to the energy crisis today. Government should something today to improve the situation now.

Build nuclear because it makes sense long term. Support getting off fossil fuels with some real action today.

  9. Franz_Werfel on

Fucking hell. **Just build renewables** instead of chasing the next shiny thing. It’ll be much quicker and cheaper.

  10. Data111222 on

    Well he’s not wrong tbh.

Can you imagine BAM building a Nuclear plant?

  11. On the 2 sunny days last week the UK produced 10 nuclear plants worth of energy from Solar.

Now imagine if we had more solar and more importantly offshore wind, we’d have more power than we know what to do with. Then add battery storage and the various other energy storage methods coming on the scene and intercinnectors to the UK, France and Spain and were sorted.

We don’t need to waste time and money on trying to build nuclear when we have the ability to do renewables right now, but not the willpower to push it through

  12. Well we have that interconnector and all coming together, could probably just rent a French Reactor from the lads for a bit of extra boost and all!

In all seriousness though a full nuclear reactor isn’t likely here due to the massive upfront costs in building it, you also need to have a major water supply for cooling. If we get nuclear it’s likely going to be Small Modular Reactors if the technology ever matures.

  13. harmlessdonkey on

I don’t know enough about the topic to say if Ireland’s grid can handle Nuclear power plants or if modular is an option or whatever, but Ireland has a major lack of strategic planning.

We need to establish a some kind of infrastructure fund that works at developing infrastructure. So that we can always be building and keep (and develop) talent in the country.

We need democratic accountability so the go-nogo decision should be with the Government but once done funding should be provided to the fund so that it is insulated.

They should have huge horizon timelines, so that we know a Luas will go from such a place to such a place in 2055 and that a hospital with 5 schools and such is planned near the new Nuclear Power Plant town.

  14. Build it in the North which doesn’t currently have legislation prohibiting nuclear power and connect it to the Interconnector.

  15. Important-Cry-4433 on

We can’t build a children’s hospital. What’s nuclear going to cost?

    Nuclear is incredibly expensive.

  16. SignificantFilm3887 on

About time that this is put on the agenda.
Too many people who know far too little opposing it without understanding a shred of the real science .

So much better than the alternatives.

  17. BlehMan1972 on

Why are we even entertaining this. Let’s throw away billions to consultants fees that will never go anywhere.

I wish we had a party that could stand up to these large corporations, who see us as an easy mark with more money than sense.

We have all we need around us from all of the natural resources in the world. As an island we are even more in the best position for renewables.

-Wind power. (Airship wind generator also)
    -tidal
    -wave
    -solar
    -Hydroelectric dams
-mini Hydroelectric on rivers and canals
    -biomass
    -geothermal
-take excess heat from data centres

Localise each to towns and villages, every residence having it’s own solar panels and batteries. Create a grid where overflow of localised power can be sent to other places and have battery storage.

No toxic waste to deal with. Abundant energy that is guaranteed. Tides never stop, waves never stop, daylight happens every day. We have interconnectors from other countries. If we did all of the above we’d be exporting energy.

Oh yeah and put cables underground because of the storms we will still be getting.

  18. compulsive_tremolo on

Stupid question but could we not partner with a European country like France to joint-develop a new nuclear reactor based on joint-need for demand and transmit the power cross channel?

  19. The main barrier is it would involve making a genuine capital investment for the good of the country in a project that would take longer than the current election cycle, and that’s not how this government functions.

  20. Need to have the craic with the Japanese lads, they would have it built on time and within budget.

Guessing 7-10 years to build and 5-6b. That would do maybe half of Ireland’s power needs.

5-6b loan from ECB at fuck all interest with guaranteed returns is obvious investment.

  21. EllieLou80 on

The majority of state agencies are incompetent and people think nuclear power would be safely and professionally managed here, stop it!

We’re surrounded by water and have wind, both are much better options than nuclear.

  22. jaywastaken on

The actual hardest part is finding somewhere in the country to put it. I’d be 20years of planning hell before you could even start.

  23. HybridizedPanda on

Yeah be great to wait for it to come down in cost as construction projects tend to do… Great that our government is such a bargain hunter when it comes to getting infrastructure done under budget and on time.

  24. Oh_I_still_here on

Classic government. Only thinking of the short-term cost, not thinking of the long-term benefit. God forbid any Irish politician do what’s best for the people regardless of how it might affect their own career.

Just shut up Martin. Absolutely spineless in regards to wanting to actually move the country forward to the future. We need to become energy independent and move on from fossil fuels where possible like 20 years ago, yet here we are. He’s in charge now, he could initiate this but oh no it’s too expensive. We have the money for it, just no will from “leaders”. Like everything else in this country.

  25. Icy-Reporter-6322 on

This should’ve been done years ago. First thing is remove that stupid law banning all nuclear energy from Ireland. We are already importing a lot from UK/France

  26. TitularClergy on

I’m a particle physicist. Nuclear can be fantastic if managed carefully. But, like, Ireland literally has the best wind and tidal energy resources *in Europe*. Isn’t that a strong hint at the way forward?

  27. Different_Gas_4184 on

I don’t think the government have the capacity or local knowledge to build or maintain one or the supply chains to maintain it, realistically it’s a lot of time and money for a gimmick investment when there are other proven renewable energy methods we could continue to develop – solar, wind, hydro – that would offer improved bang for your buck.

The second you pick a location for it, the locals objecting would make the metro look small scale

Edit: The argument for it is baseline power supply in variable weather but a more practical solution imo would be to develop local storage capacity and connecting and interoperability with mainland Europe’s energy systems so load can be spread. Don’t have details of specifics of what that would look like

  28. GoneRampant1 on

The fuel protests should be a wake up call that we’re dangerously dependent on fossil fuels. We need more green energy and nuclear is the future. Bite the bullet and get it over with.

  29. SoloWingPixy88 on

Lets do it. FInland did it for €11 Billion. UK did it for £46 & Austrailian did it for $8.5. So lets budget it €30 billion with an extra €15 billion over a 20+ year time frame. CPO the land. Deal with every side on the left being opposed to it and just jam it through.
