The scandal erupted in February 2024, when the names of 25 people who had received presidential pardons from then-Hungarian President Katalin Novak—a close ally of Orban—a year earlier were made public.
The pardons were granted to mark the occasion of a visit by Pope Francis in 2023, and the list revealed that one of the recipients was a man convicted of covering up the sexual abuse of minors residing in a children’s home in the town of Bicske.
He wanted to get into the history books as one of the great Hungarian leaders. Instead, he gets into as a Russian puppet who failes to a pedophile scandal.

Power really went to Orban’s and Fidesz’s head. Imagine how arrogant you need to be to pardon pedophiles and release them from prison. Thinking your voter base will forgive you anyhow as they forgave you for openly stealing billions and making the country the poorest nation in EU.
But supporting and helping pedophiles? It’s hard to really make a moral case for it. Even Orban couldn’t do it. They just thought no one would care enough to write about it. They really have been in power for way too long and became this relaxed about criminal activities and corruption.
