Per me, la cosa più frustrante della vita in Serbia è la spazzatura ovunque. Ci sono altre cose brutte, come i lavori edili selvaggi o il clima caldo, ma questa è probabilmente la più deprimente e mi fa anche vergognare…
La tua natura è meravigliosa e per qualche ragione alla gente va bene trasformarla in una discarica. Letteralmente, ci vuole impegno per scattare una bella foto, in modo che la spazzatura non venga vista… Capisco che il paese è povero e probabilmente non può permettersi un’adeguata gestione dei rifiuti, quindi ci sono discariche antigeniche, grossi problemi con la qualità dell’acqua, il riscaldamento, ecc. "accettare" che ci saranno dei posti molto sporchi. Ciò di cui sto parlando sono le persone che lasciano la spazzatura nei parchi, intorno ai villaggi, sulle rive dei fiumi, sui marciapiedi. Anche quando ci sono abbastanza contenitori…
Andare a fare un picnic e "dimenticare" la roba che hai portato. Se sei in grado di portare dentro le cose, sei in grado di portarle fuori… E quando qualcuno lo fa, può giacere lì per l’eternità. Alcuni lo sono "avanzato" – non gettano separatamente i resti di cibo e gli imballaggi, li raccolgono in un apposito sacco della spazzatura e lo lasciano lì/gettano nella natura…
Pensavo che i piccoli villaggi fossero migliori, dopo tutto ti aspetti più responsabilità in un posto in cui vivi e trascorri il tuo tempo. E invece no, riempiamo la riva del fiume dove peschiamo e riposiamo con spazzatura e non facciamo nulla… Riempiamo ogni fazzoletto d’erba di imballaggi e mozziconi di sigarette…
E anche se la maggior parte delle persone non lo fa (si spera), nessuno risolve il problema. Ci sono interi insediamenti con case e cortili puliti, dove vive un mare di spazzatura per strada… Ho fatto un po’ di pulizia anch’io e ho paura di tornare nei posti che ho pulito perché non sono mentalmente preparato a vedere più rifiuti…
Perché succede? Innanzitutto, perché le persone abbandonano i rifiuti e perché le persone che vivono nei luoghi circondati dalla spazzatura camminano lì come se tutto fosse normale? Ci sono posti in Serbia dove le persone sono meno tolleranti nei confronti dei rifiuti? C’è qualche speranza per il futuro?

only one generation away from village life their children will be a little better and their children will be civilised.
I wish I had an answer for this because it makes me sick as a local. I think it’s because people lack discipline and therefore don’t care to inconvenience themselves to keep the environment clean.

The reason is a mix of people here being uncivilized as heck (bad manners come from your home as we say here), and the state not imposing enough harsh fines for this disgusting type of behavior like in other civilized countries.

Because they don’t need to care about where their trash ends up. If I was drunk driving I’d rather live in a society where everybody does it and it isn’t seen as a problem than in a society that sees it as wrong and punishes me
You are absolutely correct. Same thing baffles me too. The people that tend to be closest to nature, those that live and work in small towns and villages have a complete disregard for nature. They don’t enjoy it rather only see a usefulness to the point it financially benefits them. I’ve seen people who cut trees shove their beer cans and plastic bottles in the hole of the tree trunk. People dump trash in the their own forest near their house. The reasoning behind it is financial and pure laziness. They refuse to pay the trash fees and just dump it. The same people that spend hundreds each month on cigarettes and booze, refuse the small trash fee. I think in large part all of this is due to the fact that many of these people work physical jobs and don’t really see nature as a place to relax or enjoy, and almost in spite or as revenge throw trash at it. Also, I’ve heard people rationalize the similar but 1000x worse situation in India as people having the same habit for 1000 years when all trash was biodegradable and continuing the same practice at a time when everything is plastic. The only solution is cultural shaming and early education, but of course this will take generations. A lot of negative practices in ex-Yu cultures are shamed in society and therefore society isolates those people, responsible trash /recycling is not yet.
