I prezzi del gasolio potrebbero raggiungere i 4 euro al litro, poiché il razionamento del carburante e il trasporto pubblico gratuito “potrebbero dover essere presi in considerazione”

The tax cuts were never going to make a difference. It was stupid for people to ask for them, and even more stupid for the government to do it.
All the cuts will achieve is to reduce the amount of revenue the government collects and can spend on targeted reliefs, while increasing the profit margins of suppliers.
Just enforce remote work you dense fucks
Easiest way to get thousands of people of the roads
Clearer roads, less petrol used, and those that cannot work remote will reap those benefits also
Bring in the free public transport.

If they hit that, there will be chaos. So, will public transport be provided everywhere?
Mark my words, free public transport will lead to fatalities.
The Red LUAS is packed full as it is, squeezing more people in that can’t afford daily life, which 4.- per liter diesel means, will not end well…..
The protestors shed their load prematurely.
Gotta love this country for a bit of scaremongering. We couldn’t live without it.
Free bus service in major cities at minimum.
Bus service in Waterford is already cheap enough though, the lack of contactless payments on the bus is what puts me off, I’d just get in my car instead.
Having to carry an additional item just for the bus – cash or leap card – while it’s absolutely a first world problem, I can just use the first world solution of a car. They want people on public transport – so make it easier.
You mean pointless protests and the acquiescence to their juvenile demands won’t have an impact on something that’s happening on a global scale? But I was told by tax dodgers and Facebook bots that this was what ‘de peeple of Aarland’ needed?
WFH solves like 90% of these issues by the way, the government just don’t want to step on the toes of businesses, because apparently they matter more than literal fuel rationing. They’re so fucking dense, I feel like I’ve died and gone to hell, and this is my punishment; to watch fuckwitted halfminds pursue ridiculous solutions to pretty simple issues.
Public transport is already incredibly cheap (thanks to the Green Party who slashed the fares).
Making it completely free will lead to people not respecting it as the best tool to a carbon free Ireland. They’ll just think it’s the crap option, and there’ll be lots of antisocial behaviour as a result, at a time when we don’t have a Transport Police force yet.
Time for an end to fossil fuel subsidies for good and just let the chips fall where they may.
Impressive that a lecturer who has no background in commodity trading, comes out with this kind of stuff and is published unchallenged.
What will the farmers do then? Take our families hostage or something. I love criticising this government, I think they are a joke however not loads they can do on this. It’s a global problem
There’s a recency bias in some of the comments I see around this – “how can we ever manage etc”. There were oil shortages in the 1970s and you can pretty much take a look and see how this will need to be handled. You can read ministerial statements [from 1973](https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/debates/debate/dail/1973-12-11/43/) and [1979](https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/debates/debate/dail/1979-05-01/4/).
Here’s what the opposition had to say in 1973 after the minister outlined the problem and the fact there would need to be provisions made for fuel rationing:
>When we requested this debate last week we were of opinion from the information available to us and what we were able to believe from reports on the oil situation that we were slowly heading for a very serious crisis in this country. The Minister’s statement has confirmed our fears and for that reason alone it is well to have this debate and also in order to highlight the seriousness of the situation to all the people and exhort them to do all they can to restrict the use of oil and oil products.
Reading back through the debates it’s clear we’re more infantilised these days, where opposition screeching is for more more more… irrespective of the fact government has already pissed €750m into the wind to very little effect.
All towns over 10k people should already have internal shuttle bus services, but in Ireland we are well behind on that
lez zem eat cakes
I’d rather public transport investment instead of spending hundreds of millions on reducing the price of fuel at the pump.
The way they can protect is simple (seeing as we have hopefully some time before then):
-Massively increase solar/wind farms. Change planning rules to ease same and reduce risks of objection.
-Increase subsidies and incentives to create electricity locally via personal solar and wind based electric creation. This will lead to energy independence and move towards less reliance on fossil fuels.
-tax rebates specifically targeted at people who actually purchase home heating oil. Fuel allowance is great for a number of people, but how many people between April and Sept of each year are going to be buying large amounts of fuel (back boilers/gas more so I suppose) but realistically the rebates should be afforded to people actually buying it, hence why it should be refunded after the purchase, or directly at source when ordering, rather than to every single person. This would definitely be better in my personal opinion.
-An All government strategy would reduce fear mongering and gerrymandering from oppositions. Create a functional group to deal with ongoing crisis and have input from all active government parties (including opposition)
Some suggestions. DM me for my number Michael Martin. Thanks.
I think some studies have been done advising against sweeping free public transport. The main argument against it is that a lot of people will use it unnecessarily for one stop trips when they could walk. The best solution is to reduce fares and have free public transport for certain demographic groups (e.g. pensioners, students, disabled, etc) it makes sense to me but not everyone will agree
If only FFG had been in power for the last several decades, they could have developed a reliable and comprehensive public transport system…
I’m not sure the public transport system can absorb free fares. I wouldn’t bank on it. Work from home + free public transport at the same time might work.
Free transport is just going to lead to overcrowded buses/trams/trains. Considering how bad it already is, this would be a complete disaster.
Strict Remote working policies HAS to be the answer. Even asking companies to extend employees days, for example from 2 days to 3 days and so on.
This sounds desperate, but can people just PM any friends or family in the USA and ask them to write to the White House to end the conflict?
Honestly, this is going to be the bank crash multiplied by COVID in terms of impact. Inflation is going to soar and homes will be twice the price they are now.

Please prep everyone now. WFH, fuel rationing, extra free public transport, let everyone know before the shit hits the fan. You know certain groups will lose their shit over this and try to take advantage.
Trump is a fucking idiot this WILL happen.
Free public transport should be a no-brainer.
For those in small towns like me that might think they won’t benefit:
– Reduced demand will keep the price down
– Driving to the nearest train station and taking the train will be cheaper for many people, especially when going to Dublin
they will do anything except let people work from home.
this is what people need to be out protesting over as its something that can actually be put into place.complaining about the price of a barrell of oil thinking michael martin and simon harris set the prices for it are beyond stupid
Cool, can’t wait for our non existent public transport to be free.
“Faster than thought”.
What idiots we have.
Looks like government inactivity over decades in terms of long term investment is finally coming home to bite them.
This is what happens when the Government make Ireland more dependent on Foreign energy and insteaf of banning new oil and gas licenses and having a dedicated Government owned company to find , extract and refine Oil ourselves we decide no, oil belongs in the ground.
The Friends of the Earth and Just Stop Oil fools will be very pleased !
I can’t imagine how much the weekly shopping will go up if this does happen.
How about you tell my company to let me make zoom calls at home, instead of having them at a desk in a glass building in the docklands. I’d gladly stay off the roads 🫠
Fuel rationing and free public transport……not the simplest, most sensible possible solution – companies that can do it- work from home
What a time to kill the 52 bus route from Ballina to Galway
