CIAO,

Grazie mille,

Arrivederci

Yep, have been gifted this sort of thing in Poland before. I believe (although I may be wrong, happy to be corrected) that’s it’s more of an infusion-type thing made with shop-bought Vodka (along the lines of Sloe Gin), rather than an actual home-distilled spirit so you should be fine.

    Białowieża?

    Białystok?

I’d trust it if the guy was feeling ok.

Pretty much. Lots of people here knows how to make alcohol.

Not that long ago even vodka was limited in purchase so people found a way around it.

It’s like tradition but not the one you should be proud about.

It definitely still happens to gift someone homemade spirits, many people are passionate about home alcohol production (wine, beer, flavoured spirits like this), in spite of the legalities around this. I understand your apprehension to test it out, I’d also be cautious if it were from some random guy. All I’d add is that it’s a sign of respect that you received this, people don’t usually go out giving homemade spirits away.

Cytrynowka is a common one. Not sure about the ‘bialy something’ though, maybe others will have an idea.

A polish guy giving you home made alcohol from his stash is bigger than you imagine.
Imagine a happy golden retriever giving you one of his favourite balls. You guys bonded 😆

Woohoo, home made cytrynówka is a great alcohol, so cheers for you. Yeah, home made alcohol is a very kind gift if this is made by passionate people (and not addicted person). But be careful – well made lemon alcohol can be made that you will not feel the alcohol much – only after few drinks when you stand up 😀

Not really a common custom, but a very welcome and endearing one. This customer is on the upper echelon of courtesy.

    yes, that one’s the best
just remember to be sitting when drinking it!

Yes. He probably meant Białowieża, which is a town. It might be normal vodka infused with lemon in this case or it might be homemade. I have seen homemade vodka like this.

  10. Yes. It’s like giving someone flowers from frolist that will die in 3 days vs growing your own, freshly picking them and giving them to someone.

What I’m trying to say is a handmade gift is almost always better than store-bought one, especially the alcohol since it’s usually way higher quality than anything you can buy.

It’s probably the best alcohol you will ever have had in your petty life.

Me and my future father in law got really fucked up drinking this.

I had two choices, do shots of the moonshine, or don’t marry his daughter 😂

Trust me when I say it, it is one of the strongest form of affection when sonebody from Poland is giving you their homemade liquor. It is not easy to get something like this 🙂

  14. You Sir just got blessed with the highest honor of being given real, homemade Polish alcohol.

I wouldn’t drink it, I’d place it somewhere on display and label it with the name who gave it to you and on which date.

Or drink it but label the empty bottle I guess so it wont go to waste.

Yes, homemade alcohol is a rather common gift, especially among older generations. It may still be dangerous of course, but if so it’s someone exploiting a common practice.

Beware, homemade cytrynówka can often taste deceptively sweet while having very high alcohol content. If you decide to drink it, start slow and check how strong it really is

If it’s cytrynówka, then it is probably made from spirit or vodka, mostly bought from store. So safe to drink 😀
Cytrynówka is made from lemon. And in general they are called “nalewka”. My favourite is from strawberries. It’s kind of easy to make, you just get some strawberries, put in jar, add a lot of sugar, wait couple days to juice appear, add spirit or vodka (it depends how much % you want to have), wait 5-6 weeks. You strain away strawberries (some people like to eat them, some add them to cake), wait another couple of weeks (or not) and ready to drink.

That looks like cytrynówka or bimber with addon flavors, This is the best alcohol you can have! If it’s moonshine, it’s deceptive, tastes like juicebox but knocks you out because it can have 50%+ alcohol!

IME homemade booze in Central Europe is some if the best stuff out there. Worked with Slovakians and would get one every now and again. Always ironic to me that there it was sought after and here if someone gave you a bottle it would be considered bathroom brewed swill.

Uncle Pavol’s slivovich was amazing and the bottle accrued stories

  19. Dark_March on

That’s an elite custom, not a normal one, you won’t find it just at anyone’s house but when you do you’re in for some good time

  20. space_doughnut69 on

Absolutely and it’s probably better than the shop crap

  21. Numerous_Team_2998 on

It is a well established custom. It takes time to make those so do appreciate it!

    HOWEVER

There is a difference between a home-made nalewka made with secret mixes of (store-bought) alcohol, fruit, sugar and spices – and between bimber which is basically moonshine and where things can go seriously wrong.

I would not drink a nalewka if I didn’t know who made it and what their hygiene and kitchen habits were, as well as their general responsibility levels.

Enjoy polish culture of selfmade liquors. That shit’s lit.
