I don’t understand how a retired housekeeper had access to 800k+ to send to romance scammers.
Usually its a nigerian who relocates to ghana because their country is notorious or this.
Honestly, the scariest thing about this story is the idea that your family members can go this off their rocker, and there is nothing you can do.
>The inquest heard Fordham was contacted by a man in Ghana known as Kofi. He claimed he was a doctor and had found out she was being scammed when he came across her details while working part-time in a phone shop.
So… on this basis, she went. *After* losing all that money.
This wasn’t a sophisticated scam operation. She clearly was extremely unwell.
I’ll admit I’m an extremely lonely guy but I genuinely can’t fathom falling for a romance scam like this.
A Sergeant Major needing help getting gold bars back to the UK from Syria? Really?
I know a woman who fell for a romance scam in her 60s. She ended her marriage and emptied her bank account before he stood her up at the airport. It was like the young male attention flipped a switch and she turned into a lovesick teenager.
I have a relative like this, thankfully she doesn’t have £800k to piss away but sent basically all of her savings to some online romance scammer who claimed they were from Australia. She now sends what little she has from her pension to fake animal rescues on YouTube (where it’s very obvious the “rescues” are staged with abused animals) – it got to the point where she was basically eating nothing but rice because she pissed all her money away to fake charities.
You can be literally at the point of barely being able to feed yourself because you are pathalogically naive and have a compulsion to give away all your money, and still be considered sound of mind…!!
From the report, nothing much can be done about her. She was found to be of sound and mind. I beg to differ. I only feel so sorry for her surviving family. All that money cheated and lost.
I wish it had been possible for her family to get a deputyship because this lady was not able to manage her financial affairs and making irrational, reckless decisions. ‘In the UK, the equivalent of a US conservatorship is a deputyship (in England and Wales), administered by the Court of Protection. It applies when someone lacks the mental capacity to manage their own affairs. A deputy is appointed to manage financial or health decisions, rather than a “conservator”. – AI overview
