Easy for the rich guy to attempt to dictate the support people may or may not require.

Has Tony Blair every said anything not evil since he left office?

  3. Living-Bat7647 on

Can we just block Tony Blair instead? Like, in general?

  4. _Revolting_Peasant on

I have worked my entire life, paid my taxes and bills. I work a stressful job, reasonably well paid but barely enough to cover my expenses. I’ve been burnt out and needed a few months out to recover. Am I not entitled to some help back from the system I am paying into?

  5. MetalBawx on

Tell you what Tony we can take your opinions seriously once you take responsibility for your treasonous lies leading the UK into fighting a war under false pretense. Let’s have you stand trial for every single dead soldier your lies killed.

Or you can fuck off back to Israel and never blight this country again?

    Sound fair to you tosser?

  6. He’s not wrong. 1 in 10 have some sort of learning difficulty, that doesn’t mean the state has to look after 1 in 10 financially. The money is running out and it is time we deaign our society so those who have got some sort of condition can function without tax funded crutches.

Signed, a dyspraxic ADHD adult with a whole lot of male relatives also having this. All of us work around it without state support.

  7. nonotthestew on

Nobody wants to hire you when you present as mentally ill, has he got a plan for that?

  8. DiMezenburg on

it is funny working in DWP and seeing these blanket statements

issue isn’t so much the claimants as the system to get a diagnosis

Block war mongers from parliamentary privilege as well as anything else that makes their life bearable

I wish my anxious ADHD brain on every single asshat who approves of it. Seriously, if you can’t be empathetic just from reading about the daily struggling we have to endure, I think only living it would give you the perspective.

When will this revolting piece of shit just keep his beak out of public life once and for all. He and Thatcher destroyed this country but at least she has the good grace to be dead.

  12. Mikins85 on

Oh look, the war criminal is back with some more opinions no one asked for.

Maybe we wouldn’t have to pay to support so many people with long term mental and physical health problems if people like him hadn’t shafted the country into the floor over the last 20 years or so.

  13. outofideasfor1 on

I wish Tony Blair would shut up. But also as someone with ADHD it’s silly to be getting benefits for it. There’s extreme anxiety disorders I can see the need for. But both need to come with mental health support or medication to get them back in to society

  14. KeithCadfael on

He is right, and most people will quietly agree. The current trajectory just isn’t sustainable – not for taxpayers or for the people who genuinely need support.

Pretending the system can keep expanding forever without reform helps no one. A fair system has to protect the vulnerable and be honest about limits.

A grown‑up conversation about welfare reform isn’t evil or unkind; it’s the only way to make sure the welfare state survives and support is actually there for those who need it.

  15. parkchanwookiee on

Let’s block Tony Blair, how about that

Just generally block him everywhere. Sounds blissful doesn’t it

What is it about this country’s establishment at the moment and this need to go to war with innocent minorities.

  18. thisistom2 on

I’ve been working the last 14 years, not knowing I had ADHD. Working harder than anyone else and never feeling like enough. Constantly burnt out. Depressed, anxious and suicidal. Modern workplaces, particularly medium sized businesses are too toxic for people with ADHD.

People with ADHD are more at risk of depression, anxiety and suicide than neurotypical people. So maybe they’d manage a bit better if people could just slightly adjust their morals and values to not constantly prioritise profit over people.

  19. weirdhoney216 on

No, fuck off. I’m sick of people acting like mental health isn’t as important as physical health. No two cases of anxiety or ADHD are the same, it’s a spectrum so yes some people can work. Some people can’t though.

  20. Inthepurple on

Doing this while providing such poor mental health treatment facilities just seems evil to be honest, I bet half the people claiming are on waiting lists

  21. RiseUpAndGetOut on

Is this the same Tony Blair who wouldn’t get the MMR jab for his kids because some things just can’t be risked when it’s your own family involved?

  22. Smooth-Pop6522 on

I’d be for stripping Blair of British citizenship, personally. I’d advocate to go further, if I could.

  23. 08148694 on

I’m diagnosed with both of these conditions and honestly it hasn’t held me back. Is it harder? Maybe? Probably? I don’t know anything else so can’t compare

I refuse to use my neurodivergent traits as an excuse or a reason to not succeed, I’ll succeed in spite of them

So yeah, feel free to downvote me but I agree. Give a man a fish and all that

  24. Glittering_Win_5085 on

If his government had realised ADHD needed to have improved diagnostics a lot of people with ADHD wouldn’t be so disabled by it.

  25. circleribbey on

Does that include service members that got PTSD and anxiety from his illegal war in the Middle East?

  26. AsleepEbb7578 on

Once again the country kowtows to pensioners. End the triple lock first, if we’re actually looking at the lions share of the “welfare bill” how’s about the over a third of each pound of tax paid that goes into the state pension?

No? Gonna say you’re “freezing grannies” again by means testing the WFA? Sure, it should have been a sliding scale rather than a cliff edge but wealthy pensioners with good private pensions should NOT be getting the WFA.

  27. PsychologicalDish430 on

The same as any medical condition, there needs to be medical proof and an official diagnosis before valid claims are made.

  28. help-its-inside-me on

ADHD and anxiety are just as much of a spectrum as any other mental health issue or mental disability. If you’re anxious you might break a nail while painting them or anxious you might not tie your shoelaces tight enough then yeah you shouldn’t be on benefits.

If your adhd just makes you make a few silly noises or flitter your fingers then yeah you shouldn’t be on benefits

If you’re so anxious you near enough have paranoia then maybe you do need the support

If your adhd is so bad you cant even finish replying to someone before being distracted then yeh maybe you do need the support.

Blanket banning these disorders is the beginning of literally every single benefit being canceled even for those with no arms or who are paralysed and bed bound.

This is a bad take from a “liberal”, its a bad take from anyone.

Every benefits should be denied on a case by case basis, or allowed on a case by case basis.

Sometimes people say the utmost moronic shit.

Edited to fix type from Ashford to ADHD, sorry if theres more grammatical errors

Blocking people from starting illegal wars sounds better to me.

  31. CrashBangXD on

Ok then make the services to manage ADHD and Anxiety easily accessible, efficient and effective?

    No?

Ok how about making systems where anxiety and ADHD being diagnosed quick and easy whilst simultaneously being backed by psychologists and doctors so no one can take the piss

Oh no to that as well?

  32. Ok-Volume-3112 on

The article says they suggest removing cash benefits for those claimants, and instead diverting the money to treatment, and that claims should be backed by medical evidence.

    Seems sensible enough no?

  35. Bubble-Master96 on

As someone who is autistic & OCD and holds down a job and has never claimed benefits, Tony Blair can do one. And so can all the people in the comments “I have this diagnosis and I work” – IRRELEVANT

There are people with my diagnosis who can work, who have very high paying jobs (like I did before taking a step back becoming a mum), and there people with my diagnosis who simply cannot leave the house. A diagnosis in this arena is not a one size fits all, we all present differently.

Maybe if work was more flexible and adaptable and compassionate towards people who struggle we’d have more off benefits and in the workforce.

  36. Beneficial_Job_4339 on

I’m confused from the comments (can’t be asked to go through the fucking 10 steps to read a bloody Telegraph article), is he saying ban people with ADHD and anxiety from receiving any kind of welfare including UC or is it specifically PIP or something of the like?

Because if it’s PIP, well for one, I’m quite surprised to hear that’s even a thing for people with ADHD, I’ve personally and indirectly worked with people with disorders such as ADHD and the like and never heard of anyone getting PIP for it.

As someone with a relatively severe case of ADHD myself, I’ve never considered it something ever warranting PIP or falling into the category, certainly from my awareness of how restrictive and tedious it can be to be awarded PIP/DSL (excepting somewhat the minority of people who game the system), I’d be shocked if any one or any significant number of people manage to be awarded it under such a basis.

Anxiety is another thing that falls into a grey area, but in most cases it’s only awarded when someone has an overall seriously compromised mental health history, including severe depression, PTSD and self-destructive tendencies etc. and even then it’s not easy. I’d be surprised if it was a thing for people to be awarded on the basis of a more common anxiety condition.

Regardless, I can’t really disagree with the sentiment that people shouldn’t be getting DSL/PIP awards for general, mildly impairing neurodivergencies and disorders but the point is again is it even a thing? Seems like the whole statement is contrived controversy.

  37. Equivalent_Word3952 on

This is horrendous and downplays mental health issues which is real and evidence based.

  38. martymcflown on

Makes me laugh when all the tradesmen on “£12,570” declared annual salary complain about people getting benefits.

  39. It is a wise thing to constantly blare a war criminal’s opinion at others. Thank you, dickheads at The Telegraph. What else does Tony think? Epstein just had a fun “little” hobby, right?

  40. peculiar-pirate on

Less people would be claiming benefits for these conditions if the NHS actually provided adequate treatments for them. Trying to get ADHD assessments and meds in this country is a fucking nightmare.

  41. Deep_Half6123 on

Including the soldiers he sent to unnecessary wars? Fuck Tony Blair.

  42. misspixal4688 on

Undiagnosed autism and ADHD killed my father. He left school in the 80s and never learned to read or write due to undiagnosed dyslexia. He never worked and used drugs to cope. He was neurodivergent, which eventually led to drug-induced schizophrenia in the 90s.
He was constantly told he wasn’t good enough, and he took his own life, leaving behind two children. Despite his difficulties, he was a loving, caring father, and I lost him.
That’s the real cost of going undiagnosed and unsupported. He isn’t the only one, and he won’t be the last. If help and support were offered early instead of people being constantly belittled for being neurodivergent, more people would be working and living happy, fulfilled lives. But it’s too easy to write people off as lazy or unintelligent.

  43. GodsBicep on

People with ADHD are many times more likely to be fired, have issues with chronic unemployment, for substance issues, for prison time, for homelessness and a many number other things too.

Why do people act like ADHD isnt debilitating in modern society? There’s a reason people with ADHD struggle with those things and that is because they physically cannot cope with a society that was built in a way that is essentially and ADHDers weakness.

  44. bugbugladybug on

I have ADHD, anxiety and depression – also ASD in the mix.

I burned out hard and begged my GP to sign me off because I was contemplating driving into a tree on the way over because I was so done.

He flat refused, saying that if I was signed off it would be exceptionally hard to get back into work because shit doesn’t get easier, I need to learn coping skills.

I was given meds and referred into therapy and went every week for almost 2 years building my resilience and ability to handle life.

At the time I was desperate and furious. I was earning minimum wage and just needed a fucking break. I couldn’t believe this guy glibly said no when I was fighting for my life.

Almost 20 years later, I get it. I don’t know if I could have gone back to work if I’d have just been signed off. I also recognise though that I was exceptionally privileged to have gotten the talking treatment to allow me to better handle life.

If you’re going to block disability, there _needs_ to be a robust alternative because you can’t just keep sending people into neuro-typical environments with no support and expect them to thrive.

Proper working reforms would be needed – integrated support for people facing mental ill health, flexible working, 4 days weeks, protected time away from work, support for childcare, etc etc.

We all know that will never happen, so this pie and the sky idealitistic approach will never work. People will just die instead.
