      So invading neighboring countries, ethnic cleansing, massacring civilians, killing doctors and journalists, shooting at UN soldiers, destroying infrastructure, looting is ok.

      Buying a cargo of stolen grain, and oh god you should NOT have done that!

      By the way, in the article body they mentioned sanctioning entities and key individuals involved, not Israel as a whole

      We should also sanction them for the war they started in Iran, which is creating an oil crisis. Its time Germany accepts that Europe interest are diametrically opposed to israel ones.

      Would the EU then also sanction all other countries buying this grain? For example, Egypt? And if you really want to be systematic about targeting a far more important part of fundraising of the Russian war effort, sanction Spain for buying tons of Russian gas. That is much, much more meaningful than a ship of grain.

      Anyway, Israel obviously should not allow this. However, Ukraine has never been an ally of Israel and shows very limited willingness to be one (for example, it never supports Israel in the UN and almost always votes against Israel) and is limitedly relevant in the Middle East, so it shouldn’t expect anything more than the bare mimimum from ties between these countries. It surely has to be aware that the war in Ukrainian is primarily an issue for Europe with much of the rest of the world not being particularly interested

      This is like the Catholic Church excommunicating Joseph Goebbels for marrying a Protestant and no other Nazi leader . Israel doesn’t even really have strong relations with Russia these days compared to the past, where Bibi used to campaign with Putin. I suspect really any sort of shift towards Russia from Israel is honestly when they want to align themselves with the United States.

      Perhaps Europe could sanction them for illegally invading other people’s land and committing war crimes. The call in Europe is getting stronger but even now there isn’t the political will.

      Europe’s credibility here is down the drain after all these years.

      We have an Israël EU trade agreement that has clear provisions to suspend for such conduct. I’m very much aware of the real life differences for Europe between Russia and Israel. Historically and in current global power dynamics. I’m very much for Israel as a safe country in the region. But the country has developed from an illegal occupier into a very active illegal war monger in these last few years. It’s a destabilizing factor in our close neighboring region and it is a threat to the safety of it’s own citizens in the long term.

      There is also a clear difference between very hard sanctions limiting all trade and maintaining a trade agreement facilitating all trade. Even the US has little influence on Netanyahu’s government. The trade agreement is really the only leverage Europe has.

      Why not use it? It would gain us more support from other players in that region and as such it is also real politik during this energy crisis. Fear of Trump? I think he’s fed up with the Israeli reaction to the ceasefire too. Perhaps we can make a deal with the US.

      I’ll believe it when I see it. They’re willing to sanction over a grain shipment but god forbid we sanction them over genocide, stealing homes and land and kicking the natives out.

      This and: Iran for creating an economic crisises and breaking international law by killing thousands of civillians. 2. Lebanon for breaking interantional law – killing tens of thousands of civillians and diplacing millions, occupying 15%+ of the country. 3. Gaza for breaking international law – killings hundreds of thousands of civillians (over the past 50years), displacing millions and occupying the majority of Palestine.

      Can someone please tell me – what is going on in a German’s head? This cannot be realpolitik, cause allowing Israel to do whatever, erodes the power of the EU.

      Sanctions on Israel for buying grains during a war occupied Ukraine, while some EU countries buy russian gas and oil.

      I don’t understand what the fuck is going on.

      Weird how we can barely be bothered enough to write a sternly worded letter when Israel commits a genocide and drives millions out of their homes, but when they buy some stolen grain suddenly we’re “ready to sanction Israel”. How come we have more respect for property than human life? Why is *this* bad enough to warrant the possibility of a real response but the intentional murder of tens of thousands of children isn’t?

      The EU values Ukrainian grain more than Arabic lives and yet “we” claim to be the beacon of lifberty and human rights. Importing goods from occupied Palestine is totally fine but importing goods from occupied Ukraine is where we draw the line.

      A lot of people in the comments just finding out now that most countries/organizations/institutions only act when it directly affects them or when they stand to gain. I can’t help to find it a bit naive.

      Edit: The Israel-Palestine conflict doesn’t really involve the EU, so it is not surprising they haven’t done much. Most of the countries that did were trying to send a message or to appease certain voter bases. You can’t really be surprised that the EU only starts acting when a conflict actually involves them. It is the same as every other political entity.

      In the same vein, countries give foreign aid, not out of the goodness of their hearts, but because it benefits the country giving aid.
