    Four Sentinel-1 Satellites ?

Sentinel-1B stopped sending data in December 2021, and Sentinel-1D is replacing 1A which will start the desorbitation soon. The headline is very generous. All in all, we retrieve the configuration we had between 2016 and 2021 or since mid-2024, with two SAR satellites (but a better signal-to-noise ratio and an AIS antenna).

However, what is particularly nice is to have had 1D just behind 1A for four months, meaning high-resolution for both time and space.

It is honestly incredible what the Copernicus program has managed to pull off. While the billionaire space race gets all the media attention, the ESA has just been quietly building the most important, open-source Earth monitoring system in human history.

Having four advanced radar satellites providing 24/7, all-weather data is an absolute game changer for climate researchers and disaster response teams. The fact that the EU makes this data freely available to the entire global scientific community, instead of paywalling it behind a private defense contractor, is a massive win for humanity.

With all the talk about European tech lagging behind the US and China, it is really nice to see the ESA successfully maintaining a 20-year unbroken dataset that the rest of the world relies on.

I found out just a month or two ago that there are some serious heavyweights in the space industry located in Stockholm. Like world leading stuff.

And here I was thinking that we were just socialist-fascist parasites on the mighty MAGA teat.

    Go Europe!
