Nel febbraio 1804, l’imperatore haitiano Jean-Jacques Dessalines ordinò il massacro di tutti i bianchi ad Haiti, ad eccezione dei polacchi, che furono dichiarati i “bianchi neri d’Europa”, e pochi altri. Furono uccise da 3.000 a 7.000 persone, influenzando il dibattito sulla schiavitù negli Stati Uniti poiché i proprietari di schiavi temevano eventi simili.
