The letter is signed by a broad alliance of 30 EU MEPs, including Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP), Chair of the Defence Committee in the EU Parliament, the foreign policy spokesman of the EPP Group Michael Gahler, the SPD foreign policy expert Tobias Cremer and the Green foreign policy expert Hannah Neumann. In addition to the German ones, numerous other MPs have also signed.
In explanation, MEPs refer to the security situation: Russia will not end its imperial course until it is stopped in Ukraine; Europe is at risk if it shows weakness. At the same time, it is a »dangerous gamble« to continue to focus on the USA. Europe’s armed forces are small, expensive and vulnerable in many places – a common, robust structure is needed.
The signatories propose the creation of a defence union; with joint decision-making, integrated command structures, strategic capabilities and a rapid reaction force. That should be not to replace or duplicate Nato, but to reinforce it with a strong European pillar – capable of acting independently when necessary.
Despite repeated commitments from national governments, Europe is moving too slowly, the alliance criticizes. It is true that the rapid expansion of European artillery ammunition production shows what is possible with political will. In many other areas, a similar acceleration is lacking – this exposes Europe’s population to risks.
Particularly urgent are the upcoming laws of the so-called »defense omnibus«, which are intended to speed up permits, reduce bureaucracy, integrate the European defense market and facilitate joint procurement.
According to MEPs, joint procurement could save up to EUR 100 billion a year. Nevertheless, some states remained in national patterns, according to the authors. Commission and European Parliament are ready, it is said – now the decisive impetus from the national capitals is needed.
Especially since Donald Trump’s re-election, there has been intense debate in Europe about whether NATO can still maintain the security architecture for the European continent. Now that the US President has announced the withdrawal of soldiers from European bases, the debate is gaining momentum again.
Rapid in EU terms means years, decades, or never.
It could be created as a separate paralel organization, with majority rule, maybe even including UK.
Any EU country could join.
It’s time to resurrect the 1952 European Defence Community. The plans were quite advanced and include a real European Army.
Now Im saying this as a pro European defence person from Ireland.
The EU as an organisation is way, WAY off where it needs to be on dealing with defence over the current individual members currently.
The EU is defacto in a war with Russia and it has choosen that the most senior military advisor for the entire EU should be an Irish Genral who was Irelands previous military Chief if Staff.
Now I love my country and served in the Irish Military BUT……come on EU. Ireland is not the military power to be leading EU in advise on how to rearm and defeat Russia.

It’s often said this would work better if split into three battle groups- Uk and Scandinavia & the Netherlands and Baltic nations for the north, navy and expeditionary focused.
Then Germany, Poland Slovakia, Czechia, Austria as an eastern facing, main massed land force
And then a southern facing Greek, Italian Spanish naval and expeditionary force which locks down the Mediterranean and approaches from the Middle East.
Then France is in a unique position where it can use its expeditionary forces to plug the gap where needed for all three.
I think the problem with one large force is that it would be unwieldy and paralysed by indecision. For example, Spain are not interested in what goes on in the high north and arctic and Estonia is not interested in the threat of Morocco to Spanish North African holdings. By all means, standardisation of equipment across the three is a good idea but actual strategic command should be subdivided or else it just won’t be able to act quickly.
Each of these proposed groups is hundreds of millions of Europeans and a very large gdp for each, enough to put up a fight against any probable attacker.
For anyone with IQ above 100 it was obviously necessary to do in March 2022.
Question: why absolute majority of EU officials have low IQ and low effectiveness?
I refuse to believe that’s because they represent EU people. EU people are smartest and wisest in the world, it’s provable fact (for example, by scientific effort focused on improving future and by civilisation level).
While I don’t like the military and am against the drafts and would prefer a more pacifist stance, I do think this could strengthen European solidarity. Just look at what Erasmus or other exchange programs are doing for EU interconnectedness, same with Interrail and stuff like that. I think it could be nice to be stationed in other countries and developing a stronger bond with other cultures and making real friends over there.
Why even try? There is already nato with the infrastructure in place. If they get their defenses on level they could use that, No US needed.
Si c’est pour etre sous l’ordre d”alemand, non merci.
