Eli5 what does it even mean?
How do we measure that?
So Switzerland has lower academic freedom than – checks notes – Nigeria? Than Honduras?
It’s all connected to how much privates commission important strategic R&D activities to universities.
When they do then they limit their possibility to publish, when accademia works only on public funds then they are free to publish.
It’s not that scary or weird or to be concerned about.
In an era in which companies do not build internal R&D but use universities this is very common.
