I don’t think it can be overstated just how badly the aristocrats of europe shat their pants because of Napoleon.
For the past 1000 years or so, commoners had fallen in and toiled for their betters. In the past 300 years, kings had legitimized their absolute rule by divine birth right and their noble blood. They were *better* than everyone else. And everyone knew that, even the commoners.
The french revolution presented an ideological problem: Suddenly the people decided they didn’t want kings. Okay, super bad, but not like all of the aristocracy were onboard with the absolute rule of kings. They wanted power themselves. They were still better, and in the many cases of modern proto-democracies, only landowners and alike could vote anyway.
Well, here comes a man, a commoner, who can 1v5 half of europe, puts the crown on his own head, declares himself an emperor (something nobody was allowed to do as that title was reserved for the elected holy roman emperor, chosen of the pope) and worst of all, his people absolutely adore him and support him to the extent of self-sacrifice. Most of our modern democratic institutions are to some extent based on napoleonic code. He transformed the political and institutional landscape and did away with the power of the aristocrats, replacing it with a code of legality.
You can say what you want about Napoleon, but at a time when the alternative was serfdom or for the few lucky western and northern europeans, still being politically sidelined and often oppressed and destitute, it sure as hell didn’t look very bad choice for the common man to follow a dude with a massive ego and lots of cannons.

Kinda funny how the French Revolution somehow ended with a guy wearing a crown again. Sure, the guy was one of the most influential historical figures in Europe, but you’d think the whole Republic thing would’ve lasted a bit longer after all that bloodshed.
